Downsized and Regretted it?

I am considering downsizing from a 39 foot pusher with three slides to a 24 foot diesel class C (Navion/View). Have any of your downsized and regretted it? If I go this route, I cannot afford to go back so it is a BIG decision.

The reasons are the usual ones: better mileage, easier driving, can fit into lots more RV sites, new systems, lower maintenance costs.

  • To me, personally, the 39 footer is way way too big so it wouldn't be hard for me at all. Although I might downsize a little less to around 27-30 ft. I think it's largely going to be a matter of attitude and expectations. We've all seen folks happy as can be in very small RV's as well as in the huge ones and each will be glad to tell you the advantages. We have had from the smallest pop-ups to a 17 ft. hybrid, a 25 ft. 5th wheel with no slides and now a 30 ft. Class C with 2 slides. We've loved them all at times. Love the 30 footer, never will want bigger but even it sometimes is a little too big for the sites we want. To me, no matter what we have it is never a "home"; it is a camper and I don't expect to have everything we have at home.
  • We sold our 08 HR 34PDD about 3 years ago. After the second trip to ND to see the Moms we decided we really hate hotels and motels. Enter the Ar-One 15RB, our hotel room on wheels. Would we spend 9 months in it traveling like we did the Class A? H$%^ no but for the short 2 to 4 day trips we do now and the annual pilgrimage to ND it works great. Down sizing is all about buying an RV that meets your needs.

  • I think it all depends on how you use it. If I was going out for a month or two at a time, I'd want my nice big motorhome. I plan on doing that someday which is why I keep my 35 foot DP. But if I were a weekender and mostly going places with hookups, I'd be fine with a smaller RV. The need of hookups is the main thing for me. My 35 footer carries 100 gallons of water and I've got a 2000 watt inverter so I can travel all the way cross country boondocking in Walmart parking lots and live on the water and power I have. Many smaller RV's only carry enough water for a day depending on whether you like taking showers or not. That would be the biggest deciding factor for me. I want an RV where I can be self sufficient for at least four days and be comfortable.

Now I have heard that they are putting bigger tanks in smaller RV's, but I haven't looked in a while so I don't know where they are with that.
  • Went from a 38' DP to a 22 foot Roadtrek.

Couldn't be happier. Don't need all that "stuff" to travel with. And the closer quarters promotes intimacy!
  • When you get down to the nity grity, only your opinion counts. IMHO, the fact that you're asking the question at all suggest you're not comfortable with the decision.

For us, if we were going to downsize is would be back to a 26' TT pulled by and SUV and not muck about with all the complexities of a MH in such a small living area.
  • Got into a dually/camper/trailer package from the 35'Wanderlodge. Really glad I didn't have to sell the bus, that would have been sad. Glad I have both.
  • We downsized from a 24 to 22 years ago. Lasted two years and this was the shortest turnover we ever had. Cousins drop from a 36 to 32. Reduced ride comfort.
  • Went from a 33' Pace Arrow to a Vegas 24.1 (25'). Just have less "stuff" that we seldom, if ever, used! Have not regretted it.
  • The big question, will YOU be happy in half the square feet of space?
  • quite a bit of down sizing though I have a very good friend that went from a 34 to a 45 pusher and nor kind of regrets it. He wishes he owned a smaller coach be cause he thinks he would use it more
