Driving courses

So, while I've driven a number of box trucks in my day, and I'm sure that I'll do fine driving the new rig, the DW and I are asking if there are courses we can take to make us better and safer drivers.

I've seen stuff from time to time, but reputable is something you can't predict watching stuff on YouTube.

thanks.
  • We recently traded for a class A. Have always driven our class C but this rv really intimidated me. I did take lessons from rv driving school. Rather expensive $500. My husband felt it would be a waste of money but I was determinied. For me it was great. After 48 years of marriage, I know my limitations. No way could my husband teach me what I needed to know. Lots of practice backing , entering and exiting highways, driving narrow 2 lane roads and driving in traffic.. it was right for me but if you have driven a class c you'll probably do fine without it. Just returned from a 4 week trip and my husband did the majority of the driving but I was able to assist when he was tired.

I'm lucky I married my instructor. Lol. Wife has CDL and driven everything you could imagine.
  • Go to Good Sam web site, Escapee's RV Club, or FMCA and look up a chapter that is near you.

They all will have info where there are MH driving classes.
  • Although I never did a course, I am a big fan of structured learning by a qualified instructor. If you are entering the Class A market, it's a good thing to do. My dad was a long haul trucker and I was mesmerized by his big truck all my life. When I had issues driving a motorhome pulling and launching a 20' boat, he helped me with that and gave me lots of pointers. I do all the driving on the Class A now. DH is quite capable but has some health issues and prefers not to. Okay by me. He's the best navigator there is. And since we full time, we don't drive 10 hours a day.

Follow the links and take a course. You won't regret it.

You didn't mention what your "new rig" is or how you are currently licensed but if you are a licensed Maryland driver and according to your profile you may be, here is a link Maryland Non-Commercial DL Regs to a brief description of what type of licensing requirements there are for various types/sizes of RVs. Good to follow-up with what is required in case you are not sure as you are searching for places to take driving instruction. Some RVers are not aware that many states require additional non-commercial licensing requirements depending upon what type of RV they are driving-Maryland is apparently a state that does.
  • DW and I took the rvschool.com course a year ago. Best money we have ever spent on a rv. She learned how to parallel park it and actually backed it thru a "S" curve of cones with her mirrors only.

A huge side benefit is that we both speak the same driving language, spot potential trouble for each other and have hand signals that are standard between us for parking. Do it. Well worth the $$$.
