Ducato/Promaster similarities

As in the previous thread:

Unless the Promaster is much heavier than the european Fiat-Ducato camper I used, I think going to a 3 liter turbo diesel is an overkill.
The 2.3 liter I drove never showed a sign of being overstressed, even in 9% climb in the Alps or 70mph highway in Italy
There goes the 30mpg+

The 3 Litre is used mainly for extended wheelbase or heavier versions of the Ducato as a Class C. I think you will have the V6 gas engine as your default Class B configuration.

Ok, since none had been built yet for the public, I didn't relate to the diesel's manumatic

The Automated Manual Transmission or AMT, only cticism that has been consistent is they can be "hesitant" changing gears at lower speeds outside of that everything up to a Class 8 truck uses them.

  • I am talking about the 6 speed MANUAL transmission.
It is the GM40 transmission used in Pontiac since 2006 (or is it 2007??), Buick and Cruze.
I know it was originaly built in Germany.... not sure if it now maanufactured locally or not
It was first developped for Fiat

With Euro6 being out now, most if not all European engine manufacturers could very easily and cheaply meet the American standards (if they not do italready)
Fiat-Chrysler's decision to eventually used the FUSO engine is most likely related to other than 'emission compliance''matters, i.e(size, weight, dimensions, availability, price, fit to the 6 speed Chrysler transmission (supplied by GM, by the way)....

Where did the "supplied by GM, by the way" come from? The ProMaster uses Chrysler's 62TE transmission which has been around since 2007 in various models, gear nos. and ratios.

    62TE

So, a Promaster with a strong diesel. And, as JackD notes, it had lots of grunt to do the job on the hills. That would be my choice despite higher cost(+4K or so). Maybe the Fiat 3 litre diesel will find it's way into RVs too not just commercial vans.

Agreed . As mentioned maybe strangled by US tier regulations as Euro V regulations on the other hand make US HD Pickups illegal to import in commercial quantities as they do not meet C02 regulations of the default
    Euro V regs used Globally.
