Got some answers on this problem. This pertains to all ford e450 chassis. If your ac defaults to defrost, the most likely problem is the check valve or vacuum tank. If your lucky, a loose vacuum line. Ford buried the valve and tank under the heater and battery box. Ford says you have to remove the heater box to get at the tank and valve. That means draining the a/c and coolant. I understand ford charges about 20 hours or more to do this. The alternative method is to cut a hole in the inner fender well for access or installing a tank and valve under the dash. I found answers on ford-trucks.com What a pain.
