East Coast

Have traveled extensively West but never traveled in the East. We are planning a trip to DC, Philadelphia, Virginia, etc in February. I hear all kinds of tales about the difficulty parking a 40 ft motorhome and finding overnight spots to stop. We will be pulling a toad. Any of you got words of wisdom for this trip? Also, will need 3-4 night stays around these historic sites........any suggestions?

  • To see DC, Cherry Hill campground is a great choice. Beautiful campground, nice amenities and about two miles from the subway. We took our toad to the subway station everyday (plenty of parking) and rode the subway all over DC.
  • DC is a PIA even in an auto, MH is not a good idea ever. Park the RV and drive the toad. At any given time you may have streets blocked and motorcades with motorcycles, police cars and black SUVs flying down the streets
  • I won't comment on the weather because it has been well (and correctly) covered. As far as finding open campgrounds, I know of 2 that would be open. Timberlane in Clarkboro NJ is very close to Philly open year round and Capitol KOA in Millersville MD is convenient to DC, but doesn't open until March 1st.

As for VA, the Fredriscksburg KOA is open year round. I really like this place; we make it a point to stop here for a couple of nights on the way to and from. Close to Richmond and various Civil War sites.
  • Weather is a real issue. It's not that it can't be done. However the conditions maybe far from ideal. I live in the area and camp as much as possible but I won't start until March 1st to avoid the worst weather.
If you can avoid February do so. If your schedule is set and is not flexible give cross your fingers and give it a shot. However you may need to be flexible and be prepared for potential winter weather.
  • Make sure you check the routes you plan to take ahead of time. There are a number of restrictions, mostly based on size. If I recall correctly, you can't drive a motorhome that size in D.C. at all (not that you'd want to). You also can't drive on the George Washington Parkway along the Virginia side of the Potomac (low underpasses), nor through the interstate tunnels under Baltimore Harbor if you have propane (though I heard this might have changed).
  • I lived in the DC area most of my life after moving East---you can work around the weather pretty easy as it only gets real bad a few days here and there. On those days its usually bitter cold and maybe, just maybe, it will snow. Just dodge the bad days. Cherry Hill campground in MD is as close as you can get to DC. KOA in Millersville, MD about 20mi out.
  • I lived in DC for over 30 years. February is probably the worst month, weather-wise, to be there. If it isn't cold and rainy, it is sleeting and icing over. Of course, the way the weather has been lately you never know.

I don't know if you like driving on snow or ice but that time of year Philly and DC might not be places you want to be. Take the advice given and plan that trip for the end of March or April.

X2, you don't want to be in the Philadelphia or north east area during Feburary.
The weather can be snow or, sunny and cold. Either way, it will be cold.
    I would wait until April.

You just need to check to be sure locations (CG's) are open in the locations you desire.

Suggestion is to wait about 40 days to really enjoy the Mid -Atlantic states, maybe come up from the deep South first. moving into the Mid Atlantic end of March or April.

We just had the Warmest December ever, so you might be good if the weather continues the trend.
