The simplest way to estimate required strength is to get a pull type scale (luggage and fish scales come to mind) and hook it up to where the cylinder would push and then measure the force required. It is important that you pull the same direction that the cylinder would push. On the case of a hinged item like most beds you can pull farther out, just multiply your reading by the distance from the hinge to the scale attachment point and divide by the distance from the hinge to the spring attachment point. Again, it is important to measure in the same direction as the spring will be pushing. Divide your reading by the number of springs that you be using. If the original springs were still in place estimate their strength and add that to your calculated strength for each spring.
