Electric powered bed lift

Has anyone installed an electric bed lift in their coach? Our new mattress is much heavier than the sleep number mattress was. Lifting the bed has become a back breaker.

I went to West Marine and bought two 100lb gas struts and replaced the existing struts that were originally installed, We replaced the short queen mattress with a one foot thick queen which meant extending the bed platform which added so much weight I could hardly lift the bed up to get too the storage. With the new struts the bed almost raises by itself in fact I added gate hooks from the box to the bed platform to hold the bed down.
  • The simplest way to estimate required strength is to get a pull type scale (luggage and fish scales come to mind) and hook it up to where the cylinder would push and then measure the force required. It is important that you pull the same direction that the cylinder would push. On the case of a hinged item like most beds you can pull farther out, just multiply your reading by the distance from the hinge to the scale attachment point and divide by the distance from the hinge to the spring attachment point. Again, it is important to measure in the same direction as the spring will be pushing. Divide your reading by the number of springs that you be using. If the original springs were still in place estimate their strength and add that to your calculated strength for each spring.

Nice idea, Groover! I don't know where to borrow a scale like that... maybe tool rental?
