Electric steps only retract with ignition turned on

New RV'er that purchased a 2003 Georgie Boy Cruise Air 3840DS XL this spring and love it. However have run into only a couple of problems on our first trip with it a few weeks back.

On the way down to VA Beach I noticed the step wasn't always coming down when I opened the door, that was kind of hit or miss. Once we got to the campground I turned the step switch on/off (not sure which position it would be labeled) to make the step not retract each time we closed the door.

When we got home and I turned everything off and shut the door to the RV, the step didn't retract, it stayed down. The only way it retracts is if the door is closed and the ignition is turned on (as it's suppose to with the override feature). Then when I turn the ignition off and open the door, the steps go down (like it's suppose to), then I shut the door and they stay down.

I've tried with the switch in both positions - same result. Clearly the motor is working since the steps retract when I turn the ignition on and close the door.

What should I check to see where the problem is? I wasn't sure if the ignition override was on a separate wire or controlled the same way as the door magnet. Wasn't sure if 1 thing could be bad or loose wire but the ignition override would still work.

  • There should be two fuses. The control circuit could have the fuse tapped off the motor power under the step near the motor.
  • I had the exact situation you describe. Check all of your electrical connections at the steps for corrosion. Those connectors live in a very hostile environment and your coach has been around long enough for corrosion to work its way into the connections. In my case, the connections for the step on/off switch circuit were really, really bad. A little work with a tiny round file and some dielectric grease made it work good as new.
  • I checked the fuse already in the battery control center, it was listed with 3 or 4 other things and used a 20amp fuse, all was good.

I'll check the switch tonight. It acts like that switch is stuck On and when I say On, i mean it's in the position to lock the stairs down.

I'll crawl under the RV and make sure everything is plugged in and connected good.

What confused me was that it works with the ignition switch, which allows me to be able to use the RV. It would just be nice for the steps to go up when the RV is parked as it's suppose to work.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate the tips!
  • Check fuse on control circuit. Should be in battery control center. Should somewhere around a five amp.
If fuse is good, check to make sure power is getting to door override switch and switch is good.
