Electric Steps

Our new 2013 Encounter 37TZ seems to have steps with a mind of their own. They go in and out while we drive down the road. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the controller for the steps. All worked well for 5 days. Now we are 1000 miles from home and they are doing it again. They do not work some of the time at all when this happens. Another bad controller or something else going on????

Any thoughts out there?

  • Mine did that too and I found the magnet mount in the door jam was loose. Once tightened all was good.

  • Either your magnets are misaligned or you have a loose ground wire in your circuit. Both are easy to check....look closely at your door frame and you'll see where the magnets are attached. You can bypass this by using a small magnet from a craft store such as Michaels, JoAnns or Home Depot. If that's not your problem, follow all the wires from the motor to the solenoid and check for a loose ground....Dennis
  • Maybe. Check the simple stuff. I had this happen.

I have a magnet mounted on the screen door that trips a switch. The magnet was just close enough that SOMETIMES it would know when the door was closed, but sometimes not. This would cause erratic behavior of the step.

Might not be your problem, but easy to check out.
