  • sorry about not getting back about my electrical problem. Have not time to look at what everyone has told me, it has been too hot out too look at any thing. I will look at in a couple days when it cools down, and thank you all for answering some of the questions. DOUG
  • New members come and they go. Wonder if he has tracked down the problem yet.
  • What chassis is your rig on?
Could be a problem with a fuse link. Ford has one adjacent to start relay. GMs are located near the starter.
Need more information as what exactly is working and what is not.
  • Welcome to RV.net RVDWJ I see you joined today to seek help with your problem. Great place for help.

If the headlights aren't working this is more than a house battery issue. Headlights should be powered from the same source as the engine electrical system unless a prior owner has made some unusual mods.

The first thing to check is the voltage on both systems, the chassis system should have a 12v battery for the automotive stuff that is charged directly from the alternator. The House should have a separate battery pack - given age and size you may have a single 12v battery or 2x6 v batteries to supply that need. If the batteries are at 12.x v (x = between 3 and 6) with no load, that is a good start. Then you just have to pick one system, I would start with house, and see where you stop seeing 12v power, a VOM or multimeter meter is the best way to do this.
If I have lost you, it is time to find someone who knows near you to help out or pay a tech to fix it.
  • Your problem is with the coach batteries.
Check the battery disconnect switch. Cycle switch, turn coach battery off then back on.
check the circuit breaker adjacent to the battery disconnect switch.
  • Sounds like your chassis battery is working fine to start your rig, but that your house battery(ies) may be dead.
  • Clean the battery post & cables good on the chassis battery.
At do a load test on it.

But if your headlights work when plugged into shore power & not with engine running. That would drive me crazy also.

Steps are usually operated by the chassis battery.
