engine removal on a Gas Unit

Anyone out there have engine work on their class A gasser? How long did it take the shop to pull the engine? How long for the rebuild on a short or long block? Just asking as we have no idea what might be a "normal" time frame. We are heading toward week 3 with not much progress in either direction. If it were a planned repair we might be more patient, but we were traveling so we are waiting away from home. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
  • The problem with any mechanical work being done while on the road is finding a shop that has the proper equipment. If you are at a small ill equipped shop with minimal equipment and staff, you are going to sit there longer.
If the block has to be removed, the shop with the proper equipment could drop it out the bottom while a shop that can't do that has to deal with taking it out the top, and maybe through the windshield, which will probably take longer.
This is a tough call and there really is not way to predict what it will take to complete the job, especially if you do not know what has to be done.
  • A member just posted the replacement he and his wife did around Christmas....I suggest a manufacturers long block. As for time....any good shop should have it out within 8 to 12 hours....and 16 to put back in and button up
  • Last fall a forum member posted the progress of his replacement of a Ford 460 engine in his Bounder motorhome.

Here's The Post. Maybe it will help you figure out what's happening with your replacement.

Possibly, you could PM him and he could give you more specifics?
  • They have not determined anything yet. The engine is mostly still in the rig. lots of pieces laying around though. Really don't have a warm and fuzzy feeling about any of it. And yes they are looking at all the "extras" like the stater and such. I guess if the parts are the long end of the wait it might be summer before we move on. (trying to smile) thanks for the reply
  • Normal is a very relative term. Parts are usually the pacing items when it comes to a rebuild.

    1. Have they determined whether you need a short/long block?
    2. Is the engine currently out of the rig?

Make sure an have all of the accessories inspected. Starter, alternator, AC Compressor etc. have the transmission inspected while you wait.
