Enough Power?

We have a 2001 Winnebago Adventurer with a 310 hp Ford engine. We've pulled a lot of hills in 97,000 plus miles. We pulled Wolf Creek Pass a few years ago - talk about a slow climb - 20 mph for about 1/2 hour. Anyway, when we got to the top we stopped to let the engine rest. Recently found out that the engine should continue to run after a long pull; helps to cool it down. Any thoughts on that?

Everyone has their own expectations on what they consider enough power. I think the post I quoted below (which is pretty much dead on)should give you an idea of what to expect.

So, do you consider that enough power? Ford owns the RV market today so you don't really have a choice in a gasser. Even the Workhorse chassis that was out a few years back was close to the Ford V10 in power. My dad had the Workhorse and I had the V10 and neither was fast when it came to the grades. I now have a 2014 Journey DP with 340HP and am pushing it to maintain 40mph on those grades so if that is not fast enough for you your going to need a much larger diesel.

In general You should find the power to be adequate!mof course it will also depend on the Year that the Engine was built as to how reliable it may be.

Yes but the Ford V10 is high reving and WILL be screaming up those hills. I always thought mine was going to blow up but it never did and was super reliable.

IMHO, the only downside to that engine is the fuel milage. I get about twice the fuel mileage towing with my DP than I did with the old 31' Class C V10.

I had a Chevy Duramax diesel with more Hp and torque than many mid-sized diesel pushers. Everybody downshifts just depends on load and how steep the hill is. I switch to Ford V-10 in a 34 Class A. It works fine and may have less maintenance than the diesel.

The V10 works great for us also. But if your expectation is to drive up grades without slowing down or downshifting like your car can do you're out of luck. All gasser MH's are going to downshift, and have reduced top speed when grades are encountered. Having said that the V10 is a fine engine, is high revving, and can make it up most anything pulling a toad.
