Ever had your mirrors hit by a pasing truck?

I was talking to another RVer the other night and we were exchanging stories about driving. Both of us had stories of mirrors being hit by trucks. In his case, his was ripped off. I was lucky, and was stopped when I was hit, and no damage was done. I know when I'm passing or being passed by an 18 wheeler, I'll hug the opposite edge of the lane I'm in.
Just curious how often this happens?

  • I used to drive class A truck for an equipment rental outfit out of southern california. My shift was usually 2am-2pm. I was headed down the 57/60 interchange a little east of L.A. about 4am one morning.

The right lane ended, the semi truck next to me kept trying to merge into the side of my truck when his driver's mirror hit my passenger mirror and completely shattered it.

I stayed with him for 15 miles blowing the air horn, waving hand signals side by side with him for that amount of time. Not once did he look over, and he knew I was right there.

I took down his company info., passed it onto my boss and let them know it wasn't my fault and that I tried to chase him down. He just kept going. That mirror was like $150 on a freightliner.
  • Not by a truck, but by a great big DP. While leaving several months ago a DP was approaching from the other direction on a narrow bridge and as luck would have it, the mirrors "kissed" and mine shattered. Had to drive a good distance before finding a place to pull over to check things out. Ended up getting a new one.
  • No damage to ours, other than needing to stop and get my "side eyes" back. Schoolbus who was not good at lane position smacked my mirror and readjusted it only.

I was stopped by a flagger in Zion National Forest for road construction. A guy in a rental RV came the other way and hit my mirror and shattered it. He never even slowed down. I was just going to fix it myself, but I found out that the parts alone are over $280.

I was parked in town and a bicyclist came by and hit my mirror with his tire pump yelling that the trucks stuck out too far!!!!! I yelled at him and told him to come back and we could talk about---------he took off as fast as he could:(:(
  • In 40 years of driving vehicles with extended mirror, I've only had it happen once on a narrow city street. No damage just touched the mirrors as we passed each other in opposite directions.

Recently my curbside mirror hit a construction sign that was sticking too far into the lane.
  • This is one of my concerns, especially when travelling on a narrow road into oncoming traffic and there is a truck coming the other way. Also, I did have a guy pulling a trailer pass me on the drivers side and hit my mirror with the camper. I was lucky that I caught up with him a traffic light and got him to pull over. Cost him over $500 to get my mirror fixed.
