Ever had your mirrors hit by a pasing truck?

I've been ignoring it for days because my story is long...

This was out first year as infield campers at Chicagoland Speedway.
After the race, we left out kinda quick. We stopped where the cops were directing traffic at the owners lot exit, waited for a few Prevosts to make the turn and head under the tunnel.

Just as it was our turn, this Joliet cop on a Harley rumbles into the intersection. he does a couple circles in front of us and motors over to my side window and shouts "where you headed"?

My answer is "I80 West" He hollers "follow me", turns on his lights and siren, and heads through the tunnel in the opposing lane, bypassing all the outbound traffic. As we come out of the tunnel onto the ring rd intersection, all the cops are stopping traffic to let us pass. We continue north of the track on the little 2 lane they route all the westbound race traffic thru, following that crazy cop on his Harley.

At each intersection, the other cops are stopping traffic for us, we never stop.

Cars coming at us on this 2 lane (no curbs, no shoulders, open ditches) are driving off the road into the ditch to let us pass.

We start coming past the race car haulers, giant frieghtline 18 wheelers pulling huge trailers full of millions of dollars of race cars and parts. They are pulling as far right off the road as they can to let us by.

As we go by the #18 Kyle Busch M&M's hauler, my mirror clips his and knocks it off, no damage to mine.

Eventually, we get to the onramp. My cop buddy does a figure 8 in the road, shuts off his lights and siren, and continues north into Joliet.
I swing the Monaco onto the on-ramp, blast the airhorns, and look at son#1 in the pass seat. And we both say at the same time:

"Did that really happen"?

Yup. It did.

Happened to us once several years ago, back when we had a Ford Excursion (with the huge mirrors) and a 34' TT. Wasn't on the road and wasn't a truck, though, it was another RV and happened at a campground front office.

We were sitting, parked at the front office at Ocean Lakes CG in Myrtle Beach, SC. Had just got there and finished paying for our site, was fixing to head to our site. I walk out of office, right as this big MH is passing by us on the left. It starts to turn to the left, swinging its back end to the right, toward our truck. DW is freaking out, saying he's gonna hit us. Before we could stop him, say or do anything, sure enough, back end of his MH caught the truck's drive side mirror.

He got it much worse than we did! Did ZERO damage to the mirror or the truck. The mirror just pivoted forward (those mirrors on the Excursions will pivot forward or backward, great mirrors!). It was able to pivot forward enough to keep from doing any damage to the mirror at all. All I had to do was put the mirror back in place. However, the contact left a nice long black streak across the right side of that Motorhome!

I never could get the guy's attention, nor ever saw him again. He left off into the CG sporting a nice long black streak across his Motorhome. May well have washed, buffed out, I don't know. I'm sure it made for some 'interesting' conversation when he got to his site and found out what he'd done. :)

Ever since then, we always use Ocean Lake's 'express check-in' service whenever we go there, so we never have to stop at their front office to check in. Just soooo many RVs coming through there all the time at that place (its a huge, very busy CG), very easy for that to happen.

YES - hit by an oversized load on a truck trailer that decided to pass me on the LEFT side of my coach while I was at or slightly above the speed limit. Fortunately was a glancing blow and low speed differential and only caused the mirror to fold in as designed. Had to pull off, reduce my heart rate and reset the mirror before continuing. Emailed the truck company but of course never heard anything back. Simply wanted to notify them of unsafe driving........ Don't think the driver had a clue he tagged me.

Wife reminds me to pull in the mirrors on narrow streets.

Driving West in the right lane of US Highway 50 just after crossing the Annapolis Bridge, an 18 wheeler suddenly moved into my lane and our mirrors collided. I saw and heard it. Since there was little shoulder we both continued a mile or two until we could stop on the shoulder. I stopped behind the truck, grabbed my camera and got out expecting to photo my damage. I found absolutely no marks or damage.When the very worried truck driver walked the length of his trailer I totally surprised him that I had no damage. He said his passenger side mirror was out of position but could be readjusted. We shook hands and a two very drivers continued.

I ripped a passenger side mirror off on a milk truck on a narrow ridge. Another truck coming toward me did the same.
We've had the Drivers side mirror hit once but just had to move it back in place.
Passenger side too on a narrow bridge.
I look to someone to design an electric retractable and adjustable set of three mirrors. Currently two on each side are electric but all of them are not designed to take impact and swing in and save themselves. Probably some out there just have to find them and fit them. Would be tremendously useful when parked to pull the mirrors in.
Trend is shifting, I think, though to cameras, with different panoramas. lighter and smaller and cheaper put them on a electrically controlled arms and retractable arms and maybe we can eliminate all blind spots. The images along the bottom of the windshield in a panorama presentation, or a long the top.

The Year 1999 on I15 Montana being overtaken by a huge semi that cut back into our inside lane to quick pushing hubby at the time with the F350 towing 33ft 5er and children onboard into the shoulder and off the pavement. We would have lost more than just the wing mirror if hubby hadn't done all he could and there was absolutely no further over for him to go.

Idiot just drove on without even realizing what he'd done although hubby was blasting his horn like crazy. We were truly lucky to escape with our lives that day and someone had to have been watching over us.

Another time in the motorhome 2005 we had a drunk/asleep at the wheel driver coming towards us veering into our lane, as we were heading towards Hells Canyon, although hubby ended up in the verge on passenger side trying to avoid him hitting us head on he hit the rear compartments and you could see the faint scratch going into a much deeper gash and it must have awakened him to steer out. Hubby pulled over as soon as possible in a church car park after we both said I think he hit us (we could barely feel it from back there). Called the police as soon as we could but they never caught him and said it happens all the time on that road. Few days later we are headed back from Hells Canyon, going along the Columbia River heading towards the Washington Coast, and another had to be drunk/high driver weaving in and out of all the lanes, straddling, speeding up, slowing down for ages. Finally he took off at huge speed, for us minutes later to hear and see a huge bang and the car rolled several times and catch fire. Unfortunately it also involved innocent others.

Seems whenever we get damage it's always caused by others, they drive off and get away with it and we end up footing the bill. Hubby goes ballistic when it happens but,I'd rather that than our lives or injuries to us.

Happened to me on I80 heading West. Was passing a UPS double on a windy day and he ran me down into the speed lane shoulder after clipping my passenger side mirror. I mean come on. He didn't break it but it was at an angle that I couldn't see what was is the slow lane so I could get back over. Traveling alone at the time. I decided to stay in the fast lane to the next toll booth, then pulled over and straightened it out.

Yes I have only while not at fault, I hit a bob tail in the #4 lane as I passed in the #3 lane. Even my wife said he pulled to the left just before I hit him. My mirror was laid against my passenger side window unbroken but it took me awhile to make sure there wasn't anyone to the right so I could pull over. We called the CHP and when the Chippy finally found us, he talked the truck operator out of filing a accident report.

I was totally lost and if it were to happen again and the mirror was broken I would either get it towed or get an escort to the closest truck or RV dealer.
