  • When mine did that three summers ago the turbo was blown.
  • In order:

What is your air filter minder reading-- it indicates blockage of air to the engine intake? OR, how old is your air filter?

Check that exhaust brake is fully open. Lubricating it on schedule helps keep it working properly. If PacBrake: http://pacbrake.com/supplemental-brakes/prxb-exhaust-brakes/maintenance/

When was the last time you cleaned the front of your CAC (Charge Air Cooler)? If dirty, intake air temperatures can sky rocket. Affects any diesel engine.

If none of the above, take it to a Caterpillar dealer before you do damage.
  • Too much fuel for the available air. Do you have an exhaust brake? Could be air cleaner, bad turbo, CAC/plumbing leaking, stuck exhaust brake. That vintage motor has had some issues with its high pressure fuel pump, too.

Let us know what you find out.
  • Please shut off your caps lock. The post would be a lot easier to read.
