Expensive repair- lucky me

My generator just shut off while under a medium load. Engine would start but shut off unless the start button remained pressed (or "mashed" like we say in the south). Onan certified RV repair center called and said it was the slip rings whatever they are. Internet research prior to taking it in confirmed that is one of two usual causes for my problem. VERY EXPENSIVE to repair. On top of that the water heater would not remain lit on gas. New circuit board solved that. When it rains it pours. I think I will go buy a lottery ticket.
  • Slip Rings is one of the reasons Generators need to be exercised every month.

  • Even in major utility power plants the generator slip rings/brushes needed regular routine maintenance

As for water heater circuit board....they are NOT a common item of failure.
    Usually dirty contacts/loose connections/bent pins/bad grounding.

Yes they can fail....but just not common. Pretty robust and simple circuitry

  • When mine did that exact thing I replaced the control board myself and that fixed it. I understand that slip rings can be cleaned if the issue is corrosion. They actually make a special tool for that.
  • I had this exact same problem. Turns out I was out of propane. Just saying double check before spending more money than necessary.
