Extended Service Plans

I just received a quote from GS for an extended service plan. I thought it was a little high ($1700 a year-500 deductible). Anyone have another company that offers the extended service plan? I own a 2006 Georgetown with 28000 miles.

  • Our 08 Endeavor came with a 4 year no deductible extended warranty since we bought it new in 2010 after HR/Monaco went under. In the four years it was in effect we never took a trip that something major did not break and I am sure the repairs were way more than the cost of the extended warranty. The warranty expired in June and since then we have put almost eight thousand miles on the coach with absolutely no problems. Coincidence? I think not!!

X2. that's what we did and we added $X to that repair/maint. fund each month. all repairs and maint. are paid for from that fund. after 14-years we are way ahead.

  • The real fun begins as we have GOOD SAM Extended Service Protection that I thought would cover most of the cost. WRONG as the very fine print states “If a covered part damages a noncovered part the non covered part is not covered and if a non covered part damages a covered part neither part is covered” Sounds like a Chicken Ad doesn’t it.

On July 14, 10 I was headed out to the Navajo Reservation to work on a Mission Church and at about 3:00 PM a few miles from my stopping point the low water light became illumined on the dash of our Motor Home followed by a loud buzz to get your attention. I pulled off and dumped in a gallon of Extended Life Coolant and thought to myself where did it go. Got back in and the damn light came on again.

Well it is now time for more investigation and sure enough there is red fluid on the road under the radiator. More under the bed investigation leads me to suspect the upper radiator hose is leaking. So I shuts her down, fire up the 7 KW generator and get both air conditioners going as it is about 95 outside.

Time to call Coach Net our Emergency Road Service provider. Well they wanted to know my exact location so I offered to give them the latitude longitude from the GPS but they did not want that. So then I told them a few miles north of Nageezi and that did not work so I tried 58 miles south of Farmington, NM on US 550. They thought I might have to call 911 to get my exact location but we agreed I knew where I was.

They finally decided to send a wrecker out of Durango, CO but they called me and I repeated all of the information I gave Coach Net and said “NO” they could not tow me but would find some one or call Coach Net. Well Coach Net called and said they would have to look some more. They finally located Kory Jensen who owns Interstate Towing out of Farmington.

I talk to Kory a couple of times by phone and he arrives about 6:30 PM and starts hooking up and then dropping the drive line, I am a little worried as the last time we were towed we had $8300.00 worth of damage. I do not tell Kory this but he assures me he knows what he is doing. We arrive at Farmington Freightliner at around 9:00PM and he has me unhooked and the drive line back in at around 9:30 PM and yes he knew what he was doing. Before he left I showed him images of the $8300.00 damages which he could not believe. Take a look here for pictures.

I give INTERSTATE a solid 10 for their costumer service and towing. I would not hesitate a minute to recommend them

Farmington Freightliner get right on the project first thing in the morning. Since the rig can still be driven they have me pull inside where it is cooler and quickly determine it is not the upper radiator hose. Of course it can not be the upper radiator hose as I carry a spare upper and lower hoses at all times based on past experience. So they hook up the air pressure system and determine it is the radiator itself that is leaking. I tell them this is news I do not want to hear. After a couple of hours of disassembly that have the whole thing taken apart and the culprit is the plastic fan blade was broken most probably by a rock and punched a hole in the radiator.

So now the fun begins as a new radiator is $1900.00 but I am in the middle of oil well country and know there must be few radiator shops in town. We find one that will fix it for about $200.00.

The real fun begins as we have GOOD SAM Extended Service Protection that I thought would cover most of the cost. WRONG as the very fine print states “If a covered part damages a noncovered part the non covered part is not covered and if a non covered part damages a covered part neither part is covered” Sounds like a Chicken Ad doesn’t it. Well I discover the fan is covered and that is $225.00 and in order to replace the fan you have to remove the radiator, the Charge Air Cooler, and other stuff for access. Radiator is not covered but the cooling system is so go figure. So they finally agree to cover 8 hours of labor at $100.00/hour. I tell Freightliner to replace the radiator hoses, thermostats and belts while the have better access. They have to order the fan but remember I told you I carried spare radiator hoses. Well there are to two little pieces of coolant hose under the engine which I do not have. I tell them overnight the hoses and fan and I will pay the freight.

Next day which is Friday I show up and everything looks like a go until they tell the two little pieces of radiator hose that did not get shipped. I tell them to order a completed set of hoses for me to have as a spare plus the two little short one to finish the job. By this time the repair is complete except for the two little hoses and the coolant refill. At this time I decide to go home.

On Wednesday July 21 I call Freightliner and all is ready for pick up so we head out to Farmington to pick the rig up. They have kept the rig plugged in all the time it was in the shop plus it is setting out back hooked up to 30 amp so we spend the night. Next morning after we go over every thing we are on the phone with GOOD SAM for thirty minutes before they agree they pre authorized the repair. But the kicker is that they will delay by one of more days in providing a credit card number to pay the bill. I tell Freightliner if they do not get their $$ I will pay and fight GOOD SAM later. My part was a little over a $1000.00 and GOOD SAM’S part was a little under a $1000.00. Coverage not worth the price so I plan to cancel the policy.

I give FARMINGTON FREIGHTLINNER a solid 10 for their costumer service and repair. They are highly recommended by me if you need their service.

We head back home via US 64 where a couple of escaped prisoners from CO are being tracked by the State Police and the Apache Tribal Police out of Dulce, NM. The tribal cops killed one and tracked the outer one to an out house where he gave up. Again do not mess with the Apache Tribe.

  • I reluctantly got one when we bought ours last Dec it cost $4100 far 3 year 36 month $300 deductible, I have used it 2 times so for 1 for fuel pump and once for a leveling jack I think it has paid for 1/2 of it so far
  • I've had mine through Wholesale Warranties..type that in the search box above. I'm in year three of a five year contract and IMHO it's paid for itself several times over. WW, Jeff Shelton, owner is an upfront guy to deal with. Good luck with your decision...Dennis
  • I purchased mine when I bought my 5ver.
Think I paid 1300.00 with towing etc.
From Xtra ride.50 deductible at the dealer or 100 any other rv shop.
Had alot of issuses with my rv.I would of Spent more in repairs than what I paid for insurance so far.
And still have a few years left.
My rv shop says the insurance is one of the best they have dealt with.
  • I never buy extended warranty plans and have never needed them on any of the vehicles or RVs we have purchased new.

On this website there is a great write up about extended warranties...by the way the website owner is a sales rep for a company he found to be very good. This guy does his homework on everything he is interested in so I would trust his reasoning. He has had need for extended warranty on his tow vehicle.

  • I have never owned a motor home but I think I would buy the coverage that would tow or maybe change a tire. Then I would keep the other $1,500 a year for future breakdowns or repairs. I would go over all the things that cause the most breakdowns. Hoses, belts, corroded wiring etc. Many warranty's dont cover small stuff anyway.
