F-53 Repair Manuals (Chilton/Haynes/etc.)

OK, I've done a web search, but come up empty-handed.

Does anyone know if there is a repair manual available (short of the Ford Factory Service Manual, Volumes 1 through 99)?

I went through the Haynes/Chilton website and drilled through different menus and came up with nothing useful. On the Chilton side they had a link to the motor home chassis manual, but it kept returning a Ford Bronco page. Maybe their link needs to be fixed.

Anyway, I was going through some you tube videos and came across this one:
Less Junk, More Journey - getting towed

and I started thinking that many times something as simple as a failed temperature sending unit can be temporarily bypassed by unplugging it. I know that it would set an OBD-II code for low return voltage and probably throw it back into open-loop fuel mapping, but at least the coach can be driven. The problem is, I am not at all familiar with the Ford Triton series engines and couldn't pinpoint the location of that sensor with a precursory glance with the doghouse removed. I wold have expected to find it somewhere near the thermostat housing.

So, I need a manual. Next to my OBD-II scantool, it would be just as important as the full toolbox I travel with. Anyone have any suggestions? I prefer print manuals over CD-Rom or downloadable PDF manuals.

  • I know you prefer print manuals as I do but you can download an F53 2002 model year service manual HERE in case you change your mind. I got it from a friend who said Ford sent it to him when he called them.
  • I would keep checking on e bay. Ford made a single CD covering all the trucks from the Expedition and F150 to the F750 and F53 chassis. If you can find one they are a great resource. They are not time sensitive like the newer ones. Any page or page can be printed and taken to the job. There are several versions of the truck shop manual available. Some include only the light trucks sold by car dealers. Others used by the truck dealerships include ALL Ford trucks.

Here's a link to one available that covers the F150 to F550. If you look at the second picture it appears the F53 chassis is included.

The one I have looks like this.
The best part is they are far more complete than any aftermarket publication. About the only difference between the 1999 chassis and the 2001 chassis is the engine hp. Almost everything else is identical. If this one is no longer available try to get one for the F550. It's far closer to the F53 than any other chassis.
  • Well, I finally got a reply from the Haynes/Chilton Group.
No manuals are available for that specific application. Maybe I'll just get the F250/F350 manuals and then supplement the areas that wouldn't be covered by that manual (i.e. front/rear axles, fuel system).
    Thanks for the ideas folks.
  • Try some internet forums. Those manuals are still "ok" but getting really obsolete. Try a Ford repair forum as they often have very good mechanics on those.
  • Years ago I bought a CD with all the info. Then kept checking on E-Bay and picked up a few manuals for the F-53 , chassis, running gear, wiring, etc.The shop manuals for Ford dealers.
  • In theory a Chilton or Haynes Ford Super Duty manual for the year you are looking for is probably the closest thing you'll get. From a powertrain perspective the F-53 uses the same 6.8L engine the Super Duty uses and the same 5R110 transmission that was used on the 6.8L (unless you have a 2016 or newer chassis which will have a 6R140).
