Fan-tastic Fan vent cover

I have a 2011 Jayco 26DS that came with a Fantastic Fan over the rear bed. I recently bought a cover for it "Ultra-breeze" which are made to go over these fans. When I went to install it this morning, I found that the fan itself has what looks like brads, rather than screws holding it in. There is nothing to grasp. The directions tell me which screws to take out, but how the heck do I get them out if there is nothing to catch onto. I figured this was something I could do myself but now I am stymied. I have limited knowledge, but take good directions. Can anyone tell me how these fans are installed to begin with so that I can put the cover on?

Good Deal! Just be sure you seal it back up well.

    And use DICOR.

  • j-d, that is exactly the information that I need. There are l-brackets that need to be affixed and the screw heads were under some of the sealant. Perfect!!! Thanks for everyone's help. I really appreciate your comments.
  • Yes that is the problem, they are type specific to the MaxxAir II,they wont work on any thing else because of the tabs on the MaxxAir II. Nice hinges though.

I want them if Linda doesn't.

The issue using MaXXair brackets on a non-MaXX installation is that the attaching points of the MaXX brackets needs to match the spacing of the mounting slots on the Ultra Breeze.

Oh, WAIT! It's coming back to me. MaXXair II does not use mounting slots. Part of the mounting is formed into the plastic cover and the rest is formed into the aluminum bracket.

That swap won't work, not without a lot of adaptation.
  • Not to hijack this but if any one wants a set of Maxxair IImounting brackets like in this video you can have them for the postage.

They sent them to me by mistake when I wanted the brackets for my Fan Mate, they were both free and they didn't want the others back and I have no use for them.

I hear you, Bumpy! Very surprised FF did that. MaXXair uses the angle brackets to keep the possible leaks out of the wet area. The FF install probably results in a tighter fit. I've had the Maxx covers work loose. Maybe FF just wants us to invade our part and not theirs. If we were closer I could make or find Linda some angle brackets. Still, FF's plan will certainly work. It's not like we never have to work on the roof and apply sealant.

OK, found some info. In this YouTube video from Fantastic, they want you to remove two screws from each side of where the flange mounts to the roof of your coach. Then you reinstall those four screws with the Ultra Breeze mounting plates under them. After that, the vent cover's slotted holes fit over the pins in the four mounting plates. You drop a washer over the pins once through the slots in the vent cover and then push a clevis pin into the crosswise hole in each of the pins. You do NOT dismantle the Fan or its lid in any way.

If you gOOgle "ultra breeze vent cover installation" you'll see a couple videos and a few pictures.

You'll find your fan mounting flanges are covered in sealant, hiding the screws. That sealant has to be cut/dug/s****ed to give you the four flat spots to mount the plates for the cover. The are MUST be kept WATERPROOF. You need a tube of Dicor Non Leveling Lap Sealant

Dicor Non Leveling Non Sag Lap Sealant White 551LSW - Amazon. That's a caulking tube, so you need a caulking gun/frame to apply it with.

In the Holes, Around the Edge of the Flange, On the Flange where the mountings will go, On and Around the mountings at the flange.

This is not rocket science. Just be sure you don't slip and fall on the roof, don't slip and cut the thin membrane that's the roof, or... Linda...

I found where Ultra Breeze is a Fantastic Fan product. And was disappointed they don't appear to post User Guide, Install Instructions, Parts List, or the like. If you want to email me a scan of any instructions they provided with your cover, and a photo of the area you're talking about with "brads" send me a Private Message. I'll reply with my email ID and you can send what you can gather.

You can call Fantastic and I'm sure they'll be glad to help, but probably not till Monday.
  • I'd use those L brackets instead of putting more holes in the roof.

Linda, is the "frame" (by that I mean the vertical edge that the FF's lid seals down against) made of metal or plastic? I didn't use your brand of cover, but used MaXXair. For that cover, there were angled aluminum brackets. Short edge screwed to the vertical edge leaving the long edge right down against the roof. Cover attached there.
Our "frames" on the two FF's are plastic. I went to the trouble of dismantling the fans to get the stainless nuts and washers they furnished for stainless mounting machine screws into place. I would never do that again. For the bathroom vent where the frame was thin sheet metal, yes. For FF's, no. I'd use Sheet Metal screws.
Let me try to find the instructions for your covers. Or if you can, post a link. I'll be away for a couple hours...
