Fine tune leveling after slides are out?

I always level before extending slides (two slides on driver side). Then when the slides are out the coach is not level, low on driver side and front left corner. What's the opinion about fine tuning the leveling after slides are out?

  • To me, it seems sort of strange that you would have to relevel after putting out the slides. Our MH manual says to level first, then deploy slides. Our MH has two slides in the front (one on each side) that are close in size and weight, and a small one in the rear so the weight is fairly well balanced. If the OP's MH is level to begin with, maybe having both slides on one side is enough to tilt it some after opening them. Either that or the automatic leveling device needs to be recalibrated because it's not getting the MH level to begin with? And, while both slides on one side could tilt it, why would deploying the slides make the front left dip? No additonal weight has been shifted to the front.

I see no reason not to make slight adjustments if needed, but I'm not certain the automatic leveling system is calibrated correctly to start with.

  • I also level with engine running put the slides out and that's it!
  • I don't know what system your coach uses. We have a Lippert system on ours, and it tells you which side (or end) is lower and by the 1/10 of a degree. When we leveled the first few times I noted how much difference there was after extending the slides. Now I can manually level leaving the drivers side high by 1/10th of a degree. When the full wall slide is extended it's right on the money.
  • I follow the manual to extend slides than level...Bold print warnings on this. Since the slides are already out, no fine tuning necessary.

As directed by Country Coach...I level with the ENGINE RUNNING to get the maximum voltage to the pump. Lower voltage meant higher amperage and that will burn a motor out pronto!

No War, Thor signed a treaty with the camper. Just bought a new Thor Daybreak XD34 with a full wall slide. The instruction sticker above the slide out operation button gives instruction to level the unit before operation the unit. I have since found that if I'm slightly out of balance after the slide is out I do the minor adjustment needed to level. A mechanic I met while transferring our belongings indicated that leveling first was dictated because slides are now bigger and heavier than in the past.

Scott, there is NO debate. The confusion is due to the fact that all Monaco products require the opposite procedure from everyone else.

OP, you should always do exactly what your owner's manual instructs you to do. What does it say?

Says to level then extend slides which is what I do. I was only wondering if slight leveling adjustment after slides are out might cause any problem.

  • Camper Ken,
Well Sir, not to sound too sarcastic but, why would you "not" fine tune it, if it's un level AFTER the slides have been extended? I mean, if you know it's un level, then why leave it that way? You're just doing what common sense tells you to do. Leveling is always a World war III debate. Slides before leveling, slides AFTER leveling etc. So, do what your gut tells you, and obviously you've had no problems in doing your method, correct? You're fine in your methods.

  • that's precisely what we do. don't see how that can be a problem.
