Fleetwood Southwind 2004 the slide

The problem I am having is my large slide. It will go out but will not come in with out help, have to give it a big push then it will come in slowly. I was told that a long time ago that motor had a factory call back. Of course this was when Fleetwood was still in business they said.

The motor # was 521066w and they said I needed a replacement #523725 these are Power Gear motors.

If this is really what I need then where do you get them cheaper then what these RV repair shops want.
  • I have a 2004 Southwind 32VS and it also has power gear slides. I might ask you do you operate the slides with the engine running? The large living room slide drops down when fully extended to end up as the same level of the floor. Now the problem when bringing the slide back IN, the slide motor has to overcome that lifting required to start the slide up that incline. Now with the engine running, the alternator is supplying 14.1 volts to the battery and might just be that extra boost to the slide motor needed to start the slide on its way in. I also have found that the slide is trying to compress the air in the room and if you open the main door, it relieves the pressure. Believe it or not it works. Operating the slide with the engine running is right in the power gear instructions on the switch box above the door, read it. So try it with the engine running and with the main door open and see what happens. Please report back your results, and good luck.

PS I am not aware of a power gear recall on the motor, news to me but I will research it further

Thanks for that advice, makes since, the old VW Beatles were the same way, for the doors to close tightly it was recommended to crack a window so the doors would shut properly because they were so air tight, maybe I will open the ceiling vent next time, I have no issues but might take the strain off the motor..
  • if your batteries are original- they may not have enough reserve power to move that slide
  • Yes the Door is open and the motor is running, I cleaned the slides (rails) and put talcum powder on the rubber around the slide the batterys are new I even replaced the inverter. It comes up just like you said over the hump but will not come in.

the thing that funny if I take it out and bring it right back in it will come in slow but come in. The motor is working and I can see that.

They say that was a factory call back years ago, are they blowing smoke
  • Brad,
There is a 250 pound weight limit on the big slide. This includes the outside basement storage, overhead storage, under the dinette, and any other items you may have stored under the couch. When ours was new, it went in and out very easily, After a while, it became sluggish coming in. I reviewed the manual for the MH and found the weight limit. It is surprising how fast weight adds up in the big slide.
