Flushing tanks

I just traded motor homes and the water going into the tank while flushing is slow. Has anyone experienced this. I was telling a friend about this and he said he never flushes his tanks. Has had his motor home for 17 years and never flushes. I guess I have always over did it. I've noticed it takes me a lot longer to dump and flush than any or the other RV owners around me. Do you flush every time and for how long. I like for the water to run clear or nearly clear before I fold everything up.
  • I use the flusher if at a CG and have time. A couple of times a year I use my home made flusher that goes down the toilet. It aims a strong stream of pressure and really does the best job. I have my wife watch the tank level indicator and blast them directly until they read empty.
This year I'm going to try another idea. I have installed a third dump valve at the sewer hose connection so after I dump black, I can close the new valve and allow the grey to flow backward into the black tank. I figure I'll get 15 to 30 gallons in there form my 60 gallon grey tank.
Then close the grey (which will still be half full) and dump the black again.
    Then finally dump the grey.

I hope to see a lot more "stuff" coming out with this approach.
  • Come-si, Come-sa...... some do some don't. I am one that flushes after every trip. But, I have the luxury of having sewer access beside my driveway, so if I'm in a state park (which I usually am) I bypass the dump station and head on home. (On a FHU site, I flush a couple times and then empty until I get home). Once home, I connect the dump hose to the sewer hookup, connect the water hose to the built-in flush valve, turn it on and open the dump valve. Once the first batch empties, I close the valve, let the tank fill back up and them dump again, and again, and again.....until everything runs clear. Then, after disconnecting everything, I pour 2 gallons of hot water mixed with Dawn and Calgon back into the tank through the toilet and it sits like that until our next outing. All total, it takes me about 30 minutes when we get back home while the DW is unloading all the dirty clothes!
  • I flush mine every now and then, but honestly flushing is overrated. Now making sure you leave a few gallons of water in the tank, especially if you are going to park it for a while, is essential. Manking sure you use plenty of water while in use, and making sure the tank is 2/3 to 3/4 full minimum before dumping is good practice.
  • Yeah, it's not really to clean the tank as much as getting the leftovers out. A 5 gallon bucket of water down the toilet worked for me for years. The current coach has a flusher. I have a clear fitting coming out of the dump valve. I get a lot more stuff out when I turn on the flusher.
  • If I'm at a dump station on a Sunday late morning with a line of fellow campers waiting their turn I'll pass on the flush to expedite the activity.

I do, from time to time instead of flushing, add a third valve and back flush gray into the black which will flush out a lot of the heavier stuff that wasn't cleared out the on the initial draining.
  • Have had the MH for 6+ years, haven't flushed the black tank yet. I guess if I wasn't going to use it for several years I'd probably clean it. Otherwise, you just wasted the effort the first time you use it again. Take a nap, time better spent.

I did purify the water tank when I first got it, but haven't done it again and we use it for almost all of our drinking water.

  • tank flushers are great. they keep the walls from building up and lowering the capacity of the tanks. they also keep the plumbing clear for fast dumping. the type of flushers that you connect a hose to and have a back flush installed are the best. I have sat many a time wile some guy back flushes his tanks three times and uses 70 gallons of water. what a waste of water. the installed back flushers can do it with about ten gallons of water at the most and ten minutes time
  • Adding water until both waste tanks are full before dumping eliminates the need for flushing almost all the time. And like Old Biscuit I add water after dumping so they are never dry.
  • They are holding tanks....they are going to get dirty with poop the very next time you use them

I flush/rinse for just a couple minutes if that.
I find the flush system a great way of adding a couple gallons back into the black holding tank so bottom stays wet and anything left behind doesn't dry out/stick
Beats having to fill/flush toilet a couple of times cause it is right there

Slow flow on flush system......black tank spray nozzle hole clogged/plugging up
  • so do i so i flush the black tank 2 or 3 times after dumping. the only exception to this routine is if we're using a dump station and others are waiting.
