Seems to be an old wives tale and despite being scientifically tested has never been proven. According to this article, bags of water with pennies actually attracted more flies in scientific tests.

DW hates citronella.

I have a propane based fogger, have yet to use it in a campground though....

Especially if the wind is not blowing. Read and follow the instructions and they work as described.

If you can't keep them away, go to Harbor Freight and get an Electronic Fly Swatter.
Then have fun eliminating the annoying little flying things while you're sitting outside. :)

Citronella candles have worked good for us.

For flies, Hang plastic baggies with water and a penny in them.

Deep woods off dry & citronella candles.

I use Off! spray and a citronella candle on the picnic table for mosquitos. Pretty good luck with it.
