Ford F53 transmission

That filter is a canister, can't be worth $115 for the filter & to change it.

Well the Ford shop near me just quoted me at about 250. And that's without changing the filter. 365 if I also change the filter. Yikes.

Have it flushed. If you drop the pan and replace the filter, you're only getting about 1/3 of your fluid. Have the system flushed and it will get the fluid that you're leaving behind if you just drop the pan like the torque converter, lines, and cooler. It may cost more, but you're doing it properly, and let's face it these transmissions get put through a lot.

When the flush system first came into existence, it sounded like a great idea, doing a complete fluid swap. Later there was some controversy over pushing junk through the system by flushing. I've never used it and I don't know if this issue was ever resolved or became a none issue. I would do some research before going this route. Just a heads up.

I've never done the F53 transmission, but I would assume it's just like a car or pickup for that matter. There may or may not be a drain plug, most likely not. When you shimmy under the vehicle, take a large pan and rags with you. Loosen the bolts around the transmission pan and the fluid will leak out, naturally. Once the majority of it is out, remove the pan and clean the filter surfaces. There will probably be metal shavings in the pan - this is normal unless there are a LOT of them or large pieces. That's actually the main reason for changing the fluid, not that the fluid should be broken down by now unless you have a habit of heavy towing and transmission overheating. Once all is clean in the gasket area, install the new pan and gasket (depending on the type of gasket you may need to use some sort of gasket sealer), torque the bolts back (I would suggest using a 1/4" drive socket so you don't accidentally snap something off) and fill it with fluid. You'll most likely have to add the last of the fluid with the vehicle running in order to get it distributed throughout the transmission and the level reading properly. Remember that there will always be something left inside the transmission when you drain it, so if it shows full before you put the specified amount of fluid in, stop adding fluid and check it after you drive it for a few miles. You don't want to overfill it or it will cause foaming - not good. And remember to wear old clothes as the fluid usually goes wherever it wants when you loosen the pan up. Good luck!

I have a 2009 Fleetwood Fiesta on a 2008 chassis and my manual states to check trans fluid at 30,000 and replace at 60,000 miles for all TorqShift transmissions.

What am I missing?

My past MH was a 2000 Ford F53. Tranny held about 6 quarts, in the pan. I use to do about 6 to 7000 miles per year. Since it was cheap insurance I use to drop the fluid every other year, altho at the 30K mark I dropped it twice. At 30K and then at 30,500. This way I figured I got a good amount changed. I also had a drain plug and would do a hot change. Had the MH for 15yrs and did this. The tranny ran like a top for all those years, even while I watched the new owner drive away.
