Most later model engines will have a schrader valve test port to screw on a fuel pressure gauge. If the tank needs to be dropped and the pump runs at all, remove the schrader valve and install a hose on the fitting, remove the pump relay and use a jumper wire to power the pump and fill some 5 gallon jugs or give it to your buddies. It's not too difficult a job IF the tank is empty. Depending on how involved you want to get, some pumps can be repaired with a pump motor unit instead of the complete cartridge. Be careful or you will be on the news.
+1 I took exactly this approach on my Yukon recently (120k mi).
Your pump is on the way out if you have to start cranking longer to get fuel to the motor, indicating the pump check valve is leaking back into the tank. You can work around it for awhile by cycling the key twice, waiting a few seconds between before cranking. It's also easy to confirm a failing pump using a cheap fuel pressure gauge. Mine was 25psi instead of the normal 66psi.
