All of the P series chassis use the auto park brake. Up until 2004 they used the J71 type brake and from 2005 on they used the J72 auto park system.

Thanks for what year did they upgrade the problem auto parking brake, and not all P series have the auto parking brake, mine is a 2002 P series without the auto parking brake, but it only weights 12000 lbs so I guess that's why it does not have it.

Buy the one with the best floor plan and in the best condition!! Both drivetrains are fine (although Ford may be easier to get service for---------both now and in the future).

Ford or chevy is a Religion to many folks.. I go to the church of Chevy (Workhorse) myself. Nuff said.

I could go into the details, but the facts are as follows.

The Ford engine is only 15 HP more than the GM but it hits that higher power at a much higher RPM, TORQUE is the same for both (peak torque) but again the Ford needs more RPM. (you need peak Torque at lower RPM) In theory the higher RPM of the ford engine means a shorter life,, but that is theory, in practice, not much difference far as I know.

This is the biggy though

Bolted on the back side of the 8.1L Chevy Vortec engine in that Workhorse is just about the nicest transmission made, An ALLISON.. Want the nicest.. Well the 2006 Allison is better than the 2005, But again, only slightly.

When you ask who makes the best Tranny... The answer is ALLISON!

Before buying our 09 HR Admiral new I had the opportunity to test drive both the Ford and the GM versions of the same coach. I found the GM quieter and more responsive; I also like the Allison transmission. We've now had our GM 8.1L for 5 years and I'm very happy with it.

Our Pace is a 2005. Great chassis, however, your question is very much like "2005 Ford or Chevy...which is better?"
Very few have owned both, and so we all have somewhat limited experience in that regard.

My 2005 had to have the break recall down. Not sure what you mean by "auto parking brake issue". There was an issue with the Bosch calipers...had nothing to do with parking brake. The calipers would not release, issue was fixed for free by Navistar.

It's tough to beat the 8.1/Allison combination in my opinion. There's plenty of power and that transmission shifts as smooth as can be. JMHO
