Used to tow with an Excursion with the V-10 and 4.30 gears with a 5 star tune. GCWR was 18k lbs. it would climb any mountain I pointed it at. Never stopped below 50. Stock it was a dog. 3.73 and no tune and it wouldn’t get out of its own way on the highway and overpasses were ridiculous.
I now have a 2012 F53 and tow an Explorer. I haven’t weighed it yet, but I’m guessing 24K lbs. this thing is slow as hell. It’s biggest handicap is the poor tune ford puts into the PCM. First off I’ve noticed the drive by wire is very intrusive. I can hear that I’m not getting full throttle opening when I put the pedal to the floor, and I’m sure that’s what is what is holding it back in the hills.
We just went up I70 in CO over the Rockies, and then 40 into Granby CO over Berthoud Pass. That was a workout! Down to 35mph. Outside temps were 90’s and it never got over 217 on the climb. I also think these are under geared?! Mine has 4.30’s with the 22.5” tires. Even with the 5 speed trans I think it needs 4.56 minimum! My buddy went up in his 17 with the 6 speed and he was down to 25 and he was towing a Focus and is approximately 1k lbs lighter. But I’ll start with the tune first
Next year will be the 5star tune for sure!
