Four Winds or Jayco Greyhawk

We are selling our fiver and moving up to a Class-C bunkhouse. I have looked at several brands and for a variety of reasons narrowed it down to a Four Winds 31A or a Jayco Greyhawk 31FS. There are some features that one has over the other so it's nearly a coin toss to me. I talked to one local dealer and they were at $88k for the Jayco however I received a bid for each unit on RV Direct and with each of them loaded with all the options we wanted, the Four Winds came in at $68k and the Jayco came in at $77k. Pretty big difference. They both use a Ford E-450 chassis and the same components (AC, fridge, appliances, etc). So it's down to construction and over all quality. Is the Jayco that much better?
  • I have had my Four Winds since 2004 and I have had very few problems. Have driven it about 45,000 miles. Its an entry level RV so it hasn't got some of the things that a more expensive MH has, but it has served us well.

I can't speak for, or against, the newer models.
  • The Sunseeker and Forester have the 3170/3171, that would be my choice. Rvwholesalers and RVDirect carry them too.
  • LOL my heater is on the awning side. I love it that way! Its awesome to heat my hands up while I get the fire started.

I have a new Jayco and before that a Forest River. I will say the Jayco is better built than the Forest River but honestly I don't think any of them are particularly built very well.
  • And yet I own a Four Winds and she has given me thousands of repair free miles. And drives like a limo without adding all the doo dads to the front end.:W

Take a look around at the used RV lots. What you see the most of sitting on the lot.....are the ones that don't hold their value and/or peolple wanted to get out from under them even at very low miles.

When I was new to the game I took several days and drove around to all the dealership lots and it became quite apparent which brands were the bottom of the barrel.

The one thing I learned from these trips was a lot of them had the gen, and furnace exhaust on the 'same' side as the awning! Ya like I want to smell or get burned by those while sitting under the awning eating dinner with my friends and kids! Seems these previous owners found out the hard way before they traded them in!
  • Not to put a damper on things but I own a 2007 four winds 5000 29r. I have repaired everything that is in there. Everything has broken at least once. Last trip out, propane leak, Lord only knows where, satellite antenna swith broke, and roof leaks that no matter what I do I cant seem to fix. Buy something else, but save yourself some aggrevation and stay away from Four Winds. Think Winnebago.
  • in my opinion, yes and I dont own a jayco. i had a four winds, which is now under Thor, but I thought the jayco interior and build quality was better. It was my first rv and I could not get a good enough deal on the jayco and was buying a smaller unit at the time. I actually have a forest river 3010 now and have been very satisfied, and like its layout and extras even better than jayco, but the floorplan that works for you best is whats important.
P.S. not sure about 2013, but when I looked at Jayco in 2011, they had "helper' springs that made the ride a bit stiffer, and rubber bumper stops between the frame and the box which was supposed to help ride. Forest River comes with manual firestone ride rite air bags in the rear to help with heavier loads. Four Winds does not have either.
