Fresh water tank sensor

While encamped in our '99 DSDP, the fresh water tank suddenly indicated empty.
We hadn't been using it, and it had been (correctly) showing half a tank.
So, can someone tell me where the sensor is located and how to access it, and perhaps a suggestion on how to deal with it?
I filled the tank to overflowing and it still indicates empty.
Bob
  • Sounds like a broken wire on your tank sensor. Sensors are usually just small electrodes on the side of a tank. The wires are usually quite small, so getting bumped by something and broken is not uncommon. Or the wire might have just corroded and broken off. Look for four small wires attached to the side of your water tank. Usually red, green, white and black.

Does your monitor look like the one in this video?

Yes, he has that system, BUT since all it reads is Empty, Calibrating probably will not fix it. The odds are he has to go to the Fresh tank and resecure the copper pads(2) that are glued to the foil mounted on the tank. They fall off after years of use and the glue comes loose. Doug
  • Excellent!
Now, to save a bit of grinding on my old body from the coarse gravel in our campsite, can someone please tell me which side of the tank I should expect to find the sensors on?
The outside (curb, or passenger's side) will require me to remove the pegboard from that shallow bay (if that IS the fresh tank immediately behind it). Not a biggie, but as I said, being under the coach will be a bit uncomfortable, so I'd like to spend that time as efficiently as possible.
And here's another thought: won't I have to clean the surface of the foil and pads, then just glue the perimeter of the pads (backed up by duct tape) in order to maintain electrical continuity between the pads and the foil?

You have to remove the Pegboard on the pass side storage compartment. Once you remove the pegboard, you will see the foil and copper sensors on the tank. Doug

Also, NONE of that foil on the tank can touch any ground metal or frame. IF that foil touches any ground, the system malfunctions.

My '03 DS is exactly as you described. I removed the pegboard and never put it back. I just used duct tape to reattach the sensor(s) including the black and grey tank ones also. Sometimes the tape appears to be coming loose and I just push it back into place or replace it. Not a big deal in the overall picture.

A side benefit to having the pegboard out of the way is that you can see the fresh water level easily confirming what your gauge is telling you.

Go and get the silver foil tape used on home AC systems. THAT adhesive tape is perfect for replacing or enhancing the existing foil on the tanks. You also can use that silver foil to secure the wires to the tank. It will stick better than duct tape. Doug
  • Thanks to all who responded to my request for info!
I was able to access the sensors and do the repair, using my soldering iron and that shiny foil tape.
    Works like a champ now!
