Well you don't have to.
Option 1: Drain it out and refill.
Option 2: Which I do.....is don't drink water from the holding tank....EVER.
I drain mine after storage 'cause I won't even wash my hands with water that's been in the tank for 6 months. - Two_JayhawksExplorerUnless we ae using the coach within a few weeks after we put it away I will drain. I would not be drinking water that has sat in a stored coach for six months.
- Mile_HighExplorerWe always used to drain, but decided to leave water in the tank for 4 weeks between trips this year. Hopefully in CO it won't make much difference.

Sorry, regatta, but misnightsadie's plan is much safer and what I do in warm SoCal.
I'm sorry too.
I think the best plan is a combination of the two.
Note in particular what he said about not being able to drain the tank and lines completely.
I think the best plan is a substantial amount of water left in along with an extra shot of chlorine.
The residual chlorine in most city water supplies is NOT strong enough for this purpose. - LwiddisExplorer IISorry, regatta, but misnightsadie's plan is much safer and what I do in warm SoCal.
- rgatijnet1Explorer IIIIn Florida I always leave my fresh water tank full so as to minimize evaporation. The water in FL is very hard and since you can't drain it out completely what is left will evaporate and leave mineral deposits that can eventually hurt pump seals, etc. By leaving it full, especially during hurricane season, it gives me water for emergencies and the lack of free air in the tank minimizes evaporation. I guess the extra weight might help with the high winds if a hurricane comes close as well. I use city water, that is already chemically treated, so I do not have to sterilize my tank since that is done each time I fill the tank.
- LantleyNomadI would drain all the tanks. The only time I drain all of my water is during the winter when unit is winterized. For me that is a 3 month period.
- midnightsadieExplorer IIif I was storing in flr I,d put half cup bleach in the tank shake it up ,run thru the lines let sit couple hours ,then drain. on refilling for use I,d do the same thing. p.s after draining close all valves so no critters crawl in.
- gboppExplorerI always drain the tank. Sanitize when you resume using the RV.
If you're in Florida, probably some nasty stuff could grow in water that is stored in a RV tank for 6 months..
