Fuel filter change?

Got a 95 Southwind Storm with 454 TBI P30 chassis. I know the fuel filter is on the rear passenger frame rail. What needs to to be done prior to removing it for replacement?

Does the tank need to be emptied? Is there a video or detailed write up regarding its replacement anywhere?

Much appreciated,

Jim

  • So I take it that removing the fuse for the fuel pump is by choice prior to replacing the filter?

Don't want to get sprayed int the face with fuel if you know what I mean...my plan was to just crawl under after the motorhome has sat overnight and remove the old one and replace with a new one. Wasn't aware of the need to remove the fuse based on what I've read...some say yes and others say no need.

My guess is that the in tank pump does NOT allow fuel to pass when it's not running.
  • I find that it helps to let the MN sit for about 30 minutes after you shut the engine off. Before I loosen the gas line fittings I also remove the gas cap in case there is any pressure build up in the tank. Then get the proper open end or line wrenches, put them in place and then throw a rag over the fittings (Goggles!) and crack the fittings open and let the pressure release for a minute or two and then remove the fittings. When reinstalling the new filter make sure you observe the IN and OUT markings on the filter as you put the filter back in place. Clean up and then turn the ignition key to ON, let the fuel pump run and look for any fitting leaks. No leaks? Go ahead and start the engine and check again for leaks. No leaks? record the date and mileage for your future use.
  • There is pressure on the line. By the book you are suppose to kill power to the fuel pump then run engine to release pressure.
I don't worry about the pressure. I use paper towels or rag around the filter to keep gas away from me. I then remove the filter. I wait for a while before restarting the engine to allow for gas to evaporate.
Make sure you do it outside and hopefully a breeze to blow vapors away.
Use proper sized wrenches on the fuel line connectors. Doesn't matter what kind of wrench or pliers is used on filter.
  • One of the few jobs that I will let Jiffy Lube do ... in/out in a few minutes and not very expensive.
