  • I've done ok over the past few years full timing towing a toad. What I found of course with a MH towing when looking to get gas is to look AHEAD BEFORE pulling in analyzing if there is a direct exit to get out.

I stay away from gas stations where the pumps are perpendicular to the store and they have customer parking along the front of the store. These are a kiss of death when you are that long.

I don't use them solely for fueling but I know I always can get in and out at Loves. they keep the pumps WAY away from the store front and gas islands are real wide.

I try to do all my fuels stops on the interstates where I can 'see' the station from the highway to make my decision whether I will fit before I even exit.

I no longer will exit to a gas station that is not right on the intersection where I can see it.

Some of those way off the exit ramp, when you get there not only can you NOT get in to the station you can't even find a cross road or parking lot to turn around to get back to the interstate. I have had to drive miles before finding a place to turn around with those.:(

What do you consider difficulty? If you consider not being able to get into every gas station you see a difficulty, then yes. Otherwise, no. Gas stations normally come in pairs, which means the odds of finding one that you can get in and out without unhooking is pretty high.
  • You always have to remember you can't back up towing 4 down. So you need to use bigger not full of vehicle fuel stops. If you plot the fuel stops before you travel you will know where the big ones are. Pilot has a discount through Good Sam/Camping World with discounts on fuel and dump stations that are right at the pumps. They are locked and you just go in and get code after paying to use dump station. You use the Pilot card first then the payment card, of which there are some credit cards that give as much as 5% off and 0% interest for up to 18 months. Just don't miss the monthly payments or they stick you with late fees up to $35. So with both used you can get fuel cheap. Good idea is to never go below 1/4 tank, as the generator will not run under 1/4 tank as a safe guard to not strand you without gas for the RV.
  • I was looking at the 2014 Next Exit on the stand in Walmart the other day and see it was published in Jan of 2014. Do they publish a new one every year?
  • My 34' gasser has the filler right in the middle on the back so when pulling the toad 4 down it blocks quite a bit. But as mentioned make sure you can get out without unhooking. That sucks. Just getting home from a 6000 mile 6 week trip and no problems making sure you plan entry and exit from pumps.
  • I've never had a problem finding an accessible fuel stop with either our previous 33' gasser and toad, or our current 34' gasser and toad. I have driven past several potential stops though, until I found one I was more comfortable with. My rule is to always plan my exit before I pull in.
  • We use Pilot/Flying J for easy in/out.....Love's or any other truck stop would be OK..Also, a great reference is Next Exit... this book lists services at every interstate exit, with info if they are big rig friendly......
