Here's the technique I used with a Cummins that had an awkwardly placed filter:
Drain crankcase hot.
Let engine cool.
Loosen filter with wrench just enough to break loose.
Surround filter with 1 gal ziploc or garbage bag and unscrew until it drops in the bag.
