Gas Grill from Main Propane Tank: Is this right?

I am looking to "Tee" off of my main propane tank to be able to run a grill with its own regulator. I understand that I must T BEFORE the RV regulator. I believe my system will work, I would just like to confirm before I deal with a lot of shipping...

My gas grill has a hose with regulator. At the end is a female "Acme" coupling. This is what it looks like (without the grill obviously):

I plan to get a "Tee" to install between the tank and the RV Regulator:

When installed, it should look like this:

I figure I need one of these to go between my grill's hose and the Tee:

The large acme threaded end will attach to my hose/regulator, the other will screw into where it is marked "Out to Grill and Other Appliance" in the photo above this one.

Will that adapter/Tee combination work together the way I think/hope they will?

I guess one of my two biggest questions are... "Will the Adapter fit into the Tee?" and "Are there any check valves in either the Tee or the Adapter that would keep this from working?"

Thanks!
  • With your regulator as part of your hose I think your proposed setup will work fine. The only thing I would suggest is rotating the adapter so the 'Out to Grill' connector is in the 12 o'clock position, which would put the 'In from Auxiliary Tank' connector in the 3 o'clock (or 9 o'clock depending on which way your looking at it). Otherwise actually connecting the auxiliary tank hose would be difficult.
  • I'm sorry... Path and Cutlass and Wyo... I'm not really sure if you are reading my posts correctly. Did you see the part about the hose coming from my grill having the large black 'Acme' threads on it..

Path: That is exactly the youtube video that I started with... but do you see anywhere on the Tee that I can connect the Acme connection?

Cutlass: Again, nice hose, but the one that you suggested does NOT connect to my grill hose.

WyoTraveler: I'm not sure why you think I don't need a regulator on the grill? Unless you aren't reading my post where I say that I need to keep the regulator on the grill so that I CAN use it with a 20lb bottle should I want to.

Still thinking I am on the right track here....
  • Every adapter I saw in previous posts won't do it.

My connection on the MH comes after the regulator. Do not take it off prior to the requlator. The MH should have a T after the regulator and it will have a female quick connector with valve. Camco part 57638 is the adapter hose and a valve that quick connects to the MH. You do not need a regulator on your BBQ. The Camco male end of the hose fits into the valve on the MH. A new valve is included in the kit for you BBQ.

  • I think you are making it overly complicated.

This is the hose you need. The female end attached to the output you indicated in your photo. The male end attached to the propane regulator on your grill.

Or you can get what I'm using for about $80 from Amazon that includes the tee in your photo, 12ft grill hose and the hose needed to use an external propane tank. This have everything you need to do what you want. If you tap into the regulated side and run a hose to your grill that has a non-removable regulator (like the Weber Q series BBQs), it won't work. You can not double regulate the propane going to your grill.

I'm a little confused...but, as long as you don't have 2 regulators in the line, what you are showing should work great.

Can't have a reg. on the grill, and a reg on the line. I assume you have a reg. on the main bottles...
You can only have 1 regulator from the source (tanks) and the destination...ie, your grill.

The "Extend-A-Stay" style 'T' adapter connects between the on board LP tank service valve and the on board regulator. The accessory port (same thread as the small 1 lb bottles) delivers high pressure LP to the grill regulator. He'll use an additional adapter to convert the small bottle port to a standard ACME thread for his existing grill hose/regulator.

It is just like the photo... One permanent mounted tank running to a regulator that serves the onboard gas users (furnace, waterheater, stove), but I want to connect a grill that has its own regulator (at the end of the hose). I could probably "Tee" downstream of the coach regulator, but then I would have to take the regulator off of the grill, which means that I would no longer be able to hook that grill to a 20lb cylinder if I wanted to use it away from the MH.

The idea is to give me a balance between simplicity and flexibility (leaning a little more to flexibility....)
  • The simple answer is "yes", what you propose will work fine. I use the same 'T' adapter to fuel my grill, although my grill hose connects directly to the 'T' adapter, without needing the additional the ACME adapter.
