Gassing Up

I have approx. 4 hours experience driving my new motorhome and am wondering what others find easiest when it comes to gassing up. I have a 30 ft gas coach and will be towing a Ford Focus later this year. I'm aware of the Pilot and Flying J's, but they aren't everywhere I will be going. They also seem to be awfully crowded. Maybe I should gas up very early or very late?? I'm probably worried about nothing but I would appreciate any advice you can give. I've found this to be a very helpful and useful site and thank you in advance for your help.
  • it will become much easier after a trip or two.
use google map to check the stations on your route where you plan fill .
you can generally find some place near the hiway.
be very careful of tail swing when you pull away from the pump as it easy to hit the pump with rear side of your rig.
relax and enjoy and don't over think it/

Hi! Good question. I always plan my fuel stops, and do so using this site: http://truckstops.com

Better safe than sorry, especially pulling a toad.

With a gas coach I try to avoid truck stops unless they have dedicated fuel lanes like Pilot/Flying J. Regular gas lanes are challenging having to watch out for cars pulling in front of you.
  • You'll be fine, just take your time. Always make sure you can drive in and drive out, no backing up if you can help it. I had to back onto a main road one time because I blocked in. Find a large station, like Meijer since you're from Michigan. They're easy to maneuver.

There are many, many gas stations you can use. You won't have any problem.

It is a little more challenging with a gas coach.

  • First, I will use google maps and look at the route I am traveling and possible stops along the way. This way I know how access is in and out. Try to stop at stations that have pumps parallel to the store and not facing it. Also, I don't get fuel in bigger cities unless a necessity as they are usually more busy. Time of day is usually another thing I consider. Usually will fill up every 300 miles or so as long as it isn't during rush hour (morning, lunch, evening).
