GEN SET

what is the average TBO on RV genarators?
  • I had a friend that had a houseboat on the Delta in California. He had a gas generator but I forget the brand. It was one of the big ones like Onan. Whenever he pulled the boat out of the dock he would start the generator and not turn it off until he was back in port, or if he needed to change oil mid trip. He would go out for weeks at a time and the generator would run the entire time 24 hours a day. I think he told me it made it to 14,000 hours before it gave out.

Correct and it's a term normally used for airplane engines. The OP is probably a pilot.
  • The design spec for an Onan Quiet Diesel says it has a 20,000 hour life expectancy. Mine has over 4,500 hours on it.
  • A more appropriate question might be hours between overhaul. I have seen coaches with a lot of miles and few hours on the genset. If you are speaking about Onan diesels, these things can and will run on and on. MIght have to replace a belt etc, but they were 'made to run'.
I have not had experience with a gasser.
