  • About a year ago, my 5.5 wouldn't start altho it would crank forever. Got advice to pull the gas line off , get a "shorty" and put that in a can of gas...see if it started. The Generac fired right up.
Seems the fuel line had a crack in it due to age/ethanol. The Generac fuel pump works on vacuum, so all it was doing was sucking air.
Usually, to replace the fuel line from the main gas tank, the tank has to come down. Usually. I got really lucky. A long screwdriver and my arm reached the fitting on the gas tank and I was able to remove the old fuel line and install a new one. (From the passenger side of the gas tank) The auto parts store had 2 kinds of gas lines. "Standard" was something like 85 cents a foot. The "Ethanol resistant" was like 2 bucks a foot. The numbers are wrong but you get the idea....and of course, the "Ethanol Resistant" is what you need to buy.
Also, as mentioned above, check the oil. Not enough...it won't start.
  • Here's a couple of suggestions:

How are your batteries? The generator won't start if your batteries are weak. If the batteries are OK, open the generator compartment and try hitting the fuel primer for a few seconds(not too much, you can flood the fuel system), then the starter. You can also try manually moving the choke lever. Also, check that the winter/summer lever is in the correct position for the climate you are in (since you are in Florida, it probably should be summer). Of course, you should also check the oil.
  • If it is firing but not starting you might also want to check the oil level!! Not sure on a Generac but my Onan will not start if below a certain oil level. Don't ask how I know that!!:o
  • I assume this is indeed a "gas" generator, not diesel. How long has it been since you ran it? If it has been awhile, could be related to the fuel breaking down and clogging the jets in the carb.

Try spraying some starter spray in the air intake and see if it will fire. If so, that indicates a fuel delivery problem. It could require a carb rebuild if "varnish" has built up from the stale fuel.

It could also be the float stuck in the carb. We had this problem after my parent's motorhome sat for a long time and the gen was never used. By tapping the carb bowl with the handle of a screwdriver while cranking it broke loose and began to let fuel flow.

We then put SeaFoam in the fuel and let it run for hours to clean out the carb. After that it started and ran just fine. Then we SOLD it!

If it won't fire when spraying starter spray in the intake, then you have another problem in the ignition - plugs, points, etc.
  • Could be two things.

On older motorhomes, the fuel line to the generator gets brittle and cracks with age. The cracks allow air to get in the line and the generator can't draw fuel

The choke lever gets rusty and won't engage. The lever is on the bottom of the carburetor and is horizontal. See that it is free to move, otherwise clean it and put some oil on it.
