Generator R&R

My generator on my 1989 Southwind is not working. It dies as soon as you release start button. New control board and oil change and it still doesn't work. Now it looks like it is ether oil pressure switch, oil pump, brushes, or resisters. It looks like dropping it out of the rig will be simple. But just because it looks simple doesn't mean it is going to be simple. Is there something I should look out for when removing the gen.? I plan on using my motorcycle jack to raise and lower it with.

Thanks

Buster

Before disassembly, take photo's of all things as they are now. This reference photo will help when you reinstall the genset. Check to be sure your mounting system will allow the genset to hinge down for access. If not, R&R the fuel line and wiring connections, remove 4 mounting bolts and lift out. Good luck.
  • This is the same problem I was having last week. I tried all the things that I can do with the generator in the RV. There is no room to see anything to fix. The generator is in a hole and no access to see anything to work on. I replaced the control board and changed the oil. The things I can access. Now I am dropping it out of the rig so I can work on it. I want to know if there is anything I should be aware of so I do not damage things. That is what I am asking. I need to get to the brushes and oil pressure switch. I cannot do that while and check the wiring. The rig has a half tank of fuel. I have ran it for 30 seconds holding the button. The problem is not carb or fuel system. It dies as soon as you release the start button. No puff or stumble. Air filter is clean too.

The generator will run as long as you hold the start button down. It runs smooth but produces no power while you hold down the button. It must be one of the limits that shuts it down. The only thing I can reach while it is in the rig is the control card. That I have replaced and it did not fix the problem. Now to reach other parts I will have to remove it from the RV. The voltage control is on top of the generator and I cannot see it. It looks simple to just drop the generator out of the rig so I can see the hole generator. I cannot even remove the tin work to see what is under it. I also would like to put a oil pressure gauge at the same time so I can see what the oil pressure it. The generator only 303 hours of run time on it. I wonder who long the brushes should last. It has been setting sense 2006, they maybe just stuck or dirty.

Do you have at least 1/2 tank of gas?

Take the bowl off the Carb, check the needle valve, see that it moves freely, Might be stuck closed due to varnish.

  • Take the air filter off and spray some starter or just carb cleaner in the air intake while holding down the starter. If it keeps running for a second or two after letting go of the starter, it is fuel delivery anyhow, sorry I have no particular info on the removal process for your coach but that never stopped anyone from adding more advice.
  • Check the fuel line. Mine would start and run for a minite or two, then stop. Turned out the fuel line was cracked, sucking air instead of gas. Ethanol. I got lucky...was able to replace fuel line without dropping the gas tank. Problem solved.
  • Before going to the trouble of removing the generator, check the
    voltage regulator.
