The "run as long as I hold it on "Start" symptom is fairly common to your vintage Onan genny. The engine will not keep running unless the control board senses a voltage from the generator output. Dirty slip rings are one possible cause, as is a bad voltage regulator board. Dinosaur Electronics is an excellent source for quality Onan replacement boards. Flight Systems is another good source.

Have a voltage meter plugged into an outlet or even a lamp. If the meter reads low voltage or the lamp is dim then you know why the motor shuts off when you release the start button. When the button is depress it bypasses the safety loop on the computer board. You still won't know the exact thing that is causing your low voltage, but at least you will now have a base to start from.
