Going to NOLA next week - suggestions please

We are going to New Orleans next week and are looking for suggestions on what transportation to use...the hop on hop off buses or the streetcar/bus system?

Also the must see things...French Quarter, Jackson Square, WWll Museum and the Garden District are already on our list. Any other suggestions?

And last but not least - where to eat.

Thanks to all!
  • You didn't specify if you were staying in an RV. If you are I highly recommend the French Quarter RV Resort - http://fqrv.com/. As the name suggests, the location is literally across the street from the French Quarter so it is convenient to a variety of sights. I've travelled extensively and it is one of the nicest campgrounds I've ever stayed in. A bit on the pricey side but extremely nice and very secure.

    Enjoy!
  • Mardi Gras world is good, the wwii museum is a must see. Jackson square is good, as well as the water front and aquarium. Check out the riverboat Natchez. The French quarter is fun with a bunch of drinking buddies. Plenty of sex shops, strip clubs, bars and the associated scenes and smells that go along with it.
  • Cafe du Monde for beignets and coffee, open 24 hours. Gumbo Shop, which has delicious gumbos of all kinds. Neither is too pricey, but there are lots of restaurants that are excellent, like Brennan's, which has the best Bananas Foster I've ever had.
  • We just got back a couple weeks ago. We took a cruise out of there. I recommend using the streetcars. Buy a daily pass for $3.00 a day. I wanted to tour the WWII museum but we didn't have time. I recommend going to Central Grocery on Decatur St. and getting a muffuletta sandwich, where the original was made. Most other restaurants in the area are expensive. Take the streetcar to the garden district and look at all the nice homes. We usually try to hit a local brewery wherever we go. If you like to also, try The Courtyard Brewery on Erato St. It's a little hole in the wall place but it was fun. We took the kids to Mardi Gras World where the floats are made and stored. That was pretty neat. You have to walk down Bourbon St. at least once. It seemed pretty dirty this time, maybe because we went after Mardi Gras by a couple days. Try one street over, Royal St. It's not as crazy as Bourbon but has some interesting things to see.
