Goodyear Silent Armor Load Range E

A friend needed four tires. Went to Camping World, where I notice they seem to be selling or at least promoting Goodyears.

They recommended the Silent Armor. My friend didn't buy them there, went elsewhere for a lower price. He also qualified for a $20 per tire rebate from GY.

I don't need tires right now myself but I thought I'd share what I learned. CW isn't everybody's supplier of choice, but their goods are usually quality stuff.

  • Mountain roads, here, with an upgraded suspension. Plus the 8.1 and Allison. Heavy right foot of a former bank courier has nothing to do with it, of course....

Tires seem to wear faster when the coach as a Banks Kit or an 8.1 engine. Fuel mileage drops too. Something with Letting the Big Dog Eat...
  • The GY Wrangler AT SA Pro Grades on my Tiger also have a layer of Kevlar in the tread area. They're quieter than I expected, but I don't know if that's because of the Kevlar. I definitely won't get the warranted 50K miles out of them.

  • Yes, CW has a special relationship with Goodyear and will preferably sell that brand. CW sells one brand of other products as well, where the are two or more competing suppliers. In this respect, no different from big box stores in other market segments.

Goodyear tires are as good as anyone elses, at each price point. The silent armor is an all-steel LT tire available in 16" sizes, equivalent to XPS from Michelin.. Bridgestone also sells an equivalent tire, but not under their Firestone brand. Any other brands, best tire is at level of Wrangler, Transforce, LTX, and for most brands, at an even lower price point and build weight. Evem so, these cheaper tires are popular in fleet use, urban delivery particularly, where speeds are low and tires wear out quickly.

Last time I bought tires I chose the XPS. Rather than a rebate, deal was buy three, get one free, at time of sale.
  • Just don't count on collecting the rebate from the flaming, screeching idiots at Goodyear, even after carefully reading and following the instructions. I've got GY's on 2 of my 3 vehicles. They're not bad tires if you can ever get them to balance, but after my last experience dealing with GY's utterly crummy customer dis-service rip-off, I'll never buy another GY tire.

I have my second set on my 1995 F-250. I got almost 75,000 miles on the first set. Before this set I had the Goodyear Wranglers on it that came with the truck. I got 50,000 on them but then I rotate them every 3500 miles. I also run 80 pounds in them. I also have a set on my RV.

  • I use Michelin LTX M&S2 tires on our E450 Class C motorhome with their 70,000 mile tread warranty, in size 215/85R16 Load Range E.

Size 215/85R16 in Load Range E is rated for the identical weights at the indentical pressures on the same rims as the size 225/75R16 Load Range E that comes stock on most Ford chassis Class C motorhomes. However, I went with 215/85R16 because this tire size has a 1.2 inch larger diameter ... which gives me 0.6 inches higher ground clearance for less rear end dragging during offroad use, and when going into/out-of parking lots and shopping centers.
  • I put Goodyear Silent Armour on my 2010 Dodge Ram. Never again, they always wobble. One tire was out by 9 ounces. Replaced tire 8 months ago, no warranty and only 30,000KM on it. Now another one wobbles, I'm going back to Cooper tires. Never had problems.
