If you are sure you had the polarity correct and it didn't light, then the 330 reduced the voltage too much. I wouldn't think that it would, but I don't use that specific LED, I use warm white ones which have a slightly lower voltage.
I routinely use 1k resistors with most of my LEDs so it would surprise me if 330 wouldn't work. Unless the resistor is bad.
