  • Haines is an interesting little town and probably worth visiting...especially if you use it as a getting-on place for the Marine Hyway. We did this in 08 and spent 3 or 4 days there; mostly riding around on our bikes. There were some bears around so had to be careful.

Morning to get on the ferry, the mh wouldn't start and took me the whole weekend to find out that the nut holding the battery cable on the starter itself was not tight. We expected an increase in our ferry fee due to the fact we were three days late, but no... they just reschedule us and we continued as planned. Spent a week in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan.

Road to Haines was just fine.

  • Really depends on your plans from there. If by land, absolutely you are back tracking.

If also considering visiting Skagway, you can take a ferry over to Haines (next stop on the Alaska Marine HWY).

Not sure Haines is worth a round trip by land-- if getting onto the ferry, either Haines or Skagway work.
  • We were in Haines in 2006 and loved it. We stayed at a private campground (don't recall the name) and saw whales right from our lawn chairs. I don't remember anything significant about the road.

    Enjoy the trip.
