Hardwired surge protector for Thor ACE 30.1

I took my portable one and wired it into the transfer switch and mounted it inside the compartment. The main reason I did this was because it would not pass through the opening for the shore power and I had to unplug it from the power cord each time I used it.

It works the same and is mounted inside out of sight.

I epoxied a padlock hasp to the side of my portable to have something to lock a chain to.

We have an external one and we loop a cable around it and connect to the coach. It works well.

on my old 5th wheel I had a 50amp with a locking device and the connection on the trailer was hidden ( not on the outside ) on my MH the cable attaches to the outside and to steal the whole cable and surge protector wouldn't be to hard. I have not had anything stolen from me over the years, but I didnt have a $250 piece of equip just hanging out there

Yes, the portable units are weather proof. Ours has been through storms many times to include one that dumped 11" of rain in four hours. It has sat out in the hot Texas sun for a total now of 8-1/2 months with no issues. I do have the portable Surge Guard locking hasp to prevent theft.

I prefer the PI units and have the HW50C. Better protection and warranty than SG. I did have to buy a longer cable for the remote to mount it inside on the current rig. $1.96 delivered as I recall. Make sure it's a data cable and NOT the standard phone cable.

BTW These units are "power protectors" vs the simpler surge only protectors.

In both of my rigs it was next to the ATS and did not require any cutting of the original wiring - as in it can easily be removed which I did on the last rig.

I don't know about the ACE but most coaches have a transfer switch in the compartment where the power cord comes in that switches between shore power and generator. If you can find room, this is the place to install your surge protector. Disconnect the power cord from the transfer switch and attach it to the input of the surge protector. Then run another short power cord from the output of the surge protector to where the power cord was connected in the transfer switch.

Hopefully you are installing a Progressive Industries unit.

I disconnected the shore line. Placed the protector on back wall of the storage area where the shore power enters. Hooked the shore power wires on the incoming side of protector. Then hooked up new wires (make sure they are big enough) from the outgoing portion of the protector to the incoming connections for the coach.
