Headed back to St. Louis

We live in the are headed back to Old St. Charles, Mo. the middle of August. Debating on whether to take 80 through Wyoming or 40 through Amarillo. What would be your recommendation and why. We may be there for a couple months and will definitely come back 80 because we have a club rally in Pismo Nov. 1.
  • The shortest distance between 2 points is the directest. Drove a truck across about 200 teen times, all different ways, wouldn't attempt the Co River on 40 in the daytime no how when road temps can reach 150. I70 is the lesser packed of the 2 but has the harder pulls. Your fuel mileage may vary.
  • Coming across Missouri hwy 36 is 4 lane divided all the way and very little traffic. I70 and I80 are packed with big truck traffic and since they are both very hilly (sp?). Can be slow.

Why not I-70 - would allow you to see more than the other Routes.

I took the liberty of sliding off to Moab and Driving RT 126 along the Colorado River and sliding off on RT 6 into Golden, two drives I always make.

IMHO this is just a drive with so many options - First Lake Tahoe/Reno - then Utah and many State and National Parks as you drive I-70 - Goblins and Capitol Reef are right off the road - Moab and Rt 128 - Colorado National Monument - Maroon Bells/Aspen - Minturn/Red Cliff/Leadville/Buena Vista (RT 24 - 91) - Then RT 6 into Golden .

As many times as we've driven through these areas every return visit is Special, always discovering new and Memorable things along the way.

Sorry but I've made the mistake of driving I-80 - too many trucks and the concrete joints will rattle even my Old Hard Head.

If you are already set on going back on 80 why not add a little adventure to the drive out.

In my RV book - the "drive is usually better than the destination".

    Just my .02 cents,

Edit; Think how nice those Cool Crisp Night's will feel in the mountains of Colorado in August.

it's 80 thru wyoming and 40 thru amarillo. we travel 44/40/17 fm st louis to mesa,az and back each spring. other than the climb towards flagstaff and a couple smaller climbs in albuquerque 40 is pretty flat. in trrms of road condition 40 is in pretty good shape except IN flagstaff and IN amarillo. if you live in st charles then you should know how bad 44/55 is IN st louis. if you're coming back on 80 then i'd definitely take 40 in.

Thanks, changed to routes. It's now correct. I like 80, especially the weather in August but there such long stretches of nothing.:)
