Help check trans light we're stuck

We have an Allison 3000mh trans. We moved from the campground about 1/2 mile to the parking lot to tour Graceland. When we came back, I got the check trans light and she would not change out of neutral. The first diagnostic said 13 23 (ECU input voltage high). I switched control panel on and off, undid the chassis batts. Nothing. Good Sam Roadside said with a trans issue I needed to get to a trans shop. After the tow, the diagnostics say 42 14 through 42 22 (C D E F G solenoids shorted to battery). Can anyone help or advise please. I'm getting the Memphis blues.

  • Update. I explained it to an Allison Factory rep on the phone and the first thing he asked was "did you get hit by lightning?" I had wondered the same thing as there was a big storm. He is checking some stuff but figures the module is fried. As soon as he calls back, I'll go pick it up.
  • It sounds to me like your ECU is getting back-fed from another source through an open ground circuit somewhere. I would start by checking the integrity of the grounds.

Another possibility would be the harness is shorted to a voltage source somewhere. I would also inspect the harness looking for a short.

Also check to be sure your chassis voltage is under 15 volts.
  • Make sure that the shop knows that you're traveling and living in the coach. If you don't you could end up waiting for a tech to look at it!!! I got the Knoxville blues because Cummins didn't get a tech moving on my coach! Sat there waiting and waiting and waiting 3 days for someone to take a look. Only 1 and a half hours labor when finally said and done. I would have gladly paid double, and with a big tip, if I could have gotten a mechanic to stay late one night.
  • We had a very similar problem in Mexico, though after shutting down and restarting we were good to go for another 5 to 7 kilometers when it happened again (stuck in what ever gear it happened to be in at the time). After a 250 kilometer service call (making a long story very short) the problem was traced to a wiring harness that had fallen across the top of the engine and melted much of the insulation causing shorts. It was spliced at the side of the road and off we went. We had the repair checked by a shop in the USA who gave it a thumbs up.

I sounds very much like an electrical problem. I think it's a job for an authorised shop. but you may get lucky and find it yourself.

If you would like to read that story in detail it's on our blog under the sub heading PV to Maz, or The Blog Fodder Run. (Includes a broken mirror incident!)

Good luck, and please let us know what the outcome is.

Make sure if you need to have it repaired they tow you to a Allison Authorized Service Center...

  • Check the integrity of the electrical plugs on the side of the transmission and on the transmission control module, which may be right near the engine control panel.
