Help-Turbo Boost

So here is my new issue, wow two in one week. I'm so lucky:R. Took the MH out for a drive today just to exercise, while on my 40 min(20 miles or so)drive both on city streets and expressway I noticed the turbo boost dashboard gauge needle not moving as it usually does. I mean it moves ever so slight but not like it usually does. Now the coach ran flawlessly, good acceleration both from take off and on expressway. I saw no black smoke coming from exhaust, no power loss and engine sounded normal during entire trip. Several weeks ago took the MH for a hour run and the boost gauge worked as normal.I don't think the gauge itself is malfunctioning as the needle does like I said move ever so slight. Could this be a sensor problem?? Any help or ideas as to what might be the problem would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • I lost a boot on some of my turbo piping (pressure side). YOU WILL KNOW when you loose boost pressure. My 250HP Cummins felt like it had 2HP!!!! Once I re-seated & tightened the boot/sleeve it was all back to normal.
  • Follow up: So I got into Cummins Bridgeway for service to check out the potential boost problem. It was time for a lube, oil and filters change on the engine and genset anyways. They hooked it up to computer and and the coach showed no signs of boost problem or loss of power of any kind. They did through inspection find an air filter somewhat constricted and needing to be changed, so they changed that. There opinion is electrical, either ground or just a bad gauge as suggested by you all. So we are leaving this morning for 12 day trip to the Adirondacks for some hiking,sight-seeing and must needed relaxing. Time to build some more memories. I will track down the gauge or electrical problem when we return home. I just wanted to give a thanks to everyone who responded to the problem with there suggestions and knowledge. I really appreciate it. Safe travels to everyone and have a good day!!

  • Your 06 Dip will have an Alladin Jr. system, accessed on the backup monitor via camera 4.

There are several engine gauge screens and boost is on most of them.

Alladin ties into the ECM, and will read what the ECM see's. Since you have no performance loss, it will probably show you have the normal boost pressure.
The dash gauge, I think is a real standalone gauge.
  • Thank u Wolfe for your response. The unit has an electronic set up. I'm supposed to leave for a 10 day trip in just a couple days and I can't get service anywhere in that short of time in my area. With the coach running so good I'm at a dilemma whether to go or not. I'm not one to feel comfortable with something up in the air like this!!
  • If no performance loss, it is NOT a leak in the CAC (Charge Air Cooler) or issue with fuel filter. A leak in the CAC would result in loss of boost, which WOULD limit performance. Same for a clogged fuel filter-- at WOT, it would limit power.

I suspect it is either the sending unit or gauge-- at least that is where I would start with a bad gauge reading and full power. BTW, is it an electronic set up or do you have a line/hose from sender to gauge.
  • OK so after doing some research on line and reading other peoples post with turbo boost issues am I wrong in assuming the following:

-probably not related to an O2 sensor which I believe controls the fuel supply because I don't have any loss of power??

-probably not a low pressure fuel pump because again I don't have any loss of power and no black smoke coming from the coach??

Opinions on whether it could be related to:

-leaking inter-cooler?? What symptoms exactly would that cause?? Where is that located??

-Could it be a hose leak somewhere and if so where should I be looking. Will it cause no boost to register and if so loss of power along with that?? Which I don't seem to have

    fuel water seperator issue??

How bout something to do with the acuator??

-how bout just a simple electrical situation causing the gauge not to work properly??

I am new to troubling shooting diesel engine problems and really have never worked on them. This could very well be way over my head. Everyone's opinions would be greatly helpful

    Thanks Dave
