Thanks for the opinions folks. I appreciate any help I can get. It's my first RV and I paid $11,000 for it 5 years ago with 59,000 miles on it (when I had a great and steady job as a high school music teacher). Now, I'm a laid off music teacher with a lot of time on his hands to learn and possibly do the work the RV needs to get running. Found a local machine shop that will do a complete long block reman of my engine for $1790. Looks ok, but will have the same muted performance as before. Like Dave's idea better.
We've been to 14 states in the East Coast, throughout most of Eastern Canada, and down through the South, including Florida (Disney), all the way from Michigan. Travelling and camping in it has become the favorite past-time for my 6 and 8 year old kids, and my wife and I are sick that we may miss our only vacation this summer because of this engine failure.
Dave, that is an impressive rig you have there! How much did those engine upgrades/additions set you back? That 502 looks like it would be a beast. How has your mileage been? How close to the physical dimensions of your 454 was it? What octane do you run now? Will my current ECM do to run new chips? Do you run ODB-II now? Sorry to throw so much at you. You have me intrigued that I could resurrect this old gasser to be a diesel warrior.
