Hitch Splitter or Hitch on Toad

Hey all, we're towing a 2005 Dodge Caravan SXT behind our coach. i want to add a bike rack so here's the question: do i

1. put a hitch splitter on the back of the coach and have the bike rack there

OR

2. install a hitch on the back of the van and use the bike rack there.

Would love any advice!
  • I agree with above statements. Since I tow a van also, I'll add that the only two negatives to having the bikes on the toad is possible interference with the visibility of the toad rear lights, and you can't open the rear hatch of the van without removing the bikes.

My bike hitch can be used either on the motorhome or the toad, and I always put them on the toad.

  • I wholeheartedly agree with both of the first two answers. They're about as complete as you can get. I will only add that, if it were me, and we've been there done that, for most of our RVing lives, I'd put the bikes on the toad. Simply because, we (I) like that area of the hitch/tow bar section of the hookup, toad-to-coach, as clean and problem free as possible.

Having bikes right there, only adds to the "confusion" of the situation in that area. I know, many have done it, without issue.

And, one more thing. Some think about this and some don't. I do. If and/or when, a fire should ever occur in or on the coach, and you have thought about the ability of "quick disconnect" of the toad in such an event, you don't want those bikes causing any hiccups in disconnect emergency.

The loading and un loading of the bikes, will be more ergonomically easy on the back of the toad, simply due to height. The lower to the ground the rack is, the less you have to lift them. Just some thoughts for you.

  • If you put the rack on the back of the toad, then you can take bikes with you when you venture away from the campground. If only on the MOHO with a hitch splitter, you can only haul them on the motor home.
