House batteries

DH doesn't know why he needs to add water to our house batteries about once a month. Anyone know about these batteries. Also he is planning on putting in more acid. Would this help?

  • Hi,

Adding acid will definitely shorten the life span of the batteries. The positive plates will erode much faster and the detritus may build up and short out a cell.

    Correct, No Acid. Never.

But don't get gel cell batteries. They require very careful charging and have more limits on discharge.

I suspect Passin Thru meant AGM, or Absorption Glass Matt. They are two quite different animals.
  • DH said that he had Gel Cell batteries before and they only lasted for one year. He said that only one out of the four is doing this.
  • Hi,

With respect, Gel cells would be the last choice of most knowledgeable battery experts for RV use.

AGM are much more forgiving and more suitable than Gel.

  • NO, No ACID, distilled water to the rings. Next time buy Gel Cell batteries. Keeping them full helps them hold a full charge as the acid works with the Lead to store little electrical particles which are also what makes smoke in wires.
